Women's Basketball Routs Union College 72-51 in Season Opener

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Junior forward Viktoria Krell finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team beat Union (Ky.) College 72-51 on Saturday in the LWC Homecoming Classic at Biggers Sports Center.

In the second half, Krell knocked down a free throw to become the 12th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. The junior needed just 12 points to reach the scoring milestone. Senior Brooke Smith led Union with 18 points.

In the early stages it looked like the Blue Raiders would put away the Lady Bulldogs in quick fashion. Krell scored two straight baskets and senior Sierra Rambert knocked down a shot to give Lindsey Wilson a 6-2 lead.

From that point, the Blue Raiders failed to continue their hot streak. Union traded baskets with the Blue Raiders for the majority of the half, leading by six points or less until Lindsey Wilson utilized Union's turnovers to go on one final run in the half.

Leading 26-22 with 1:30 to play in the half, junior Bethany Spillman, Rambert and junior Diondra Anthony scored three straight baskets for a 6-0 run that gave Lindsey Wilson a 32-22 lead at the break.

Rambert made a living off of hard drives to the basket for uncontested layups as she led the Blue Raiders in scoring at the half with 11 points.

The Blue Raiders shot 44.8 percent from the field in the half, while Union managed to shoot just 32.1 percent.

Turnovers continued to plague Union in the second half as Lindsey Wilson used them for fast break points on its way to a 45-31 lead with 11:23 to play.

Union used a full court man-to-man defense in the second half to try to slow the fast pace by the Blue Raiders, but it had little effect on the score after the break. The Blue Raiders led by double figures most of the second half.

Rambert led the Blue Raiders in scoring with 16 points while also hauling in five rebounds. Anthony was the third Blue Raider in double figures with 11 points.

Krell's 10 rebounds paced Lindsey Wilson, while sophomore Lindsey Waters added seven. Lindsey Wilson led the team rebound battle over Union 48-42.

Lindsey Wilson shot 41.9 percent from the field in the game, while Union managed to shoot just 32.2 percent.

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc with the Blue Raiders shooting 10.0 percent from three-point range and the Lady Bulldogs posting an 18.5 percentage.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 8 in its final exhibition game of the season at 2 p.m. CT against Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
