Box Score NEW ORLEANS -- A second straight comeback win fell just short today as the Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team lost 76-73 to host Loyola (La.) University.
One day after erasing a double-digit Xavier (La.) University lead to win, the Blue Raiders (9-4) could not overcome a 20-point second half deficit despite missing a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
Down three (76-73) following a pair of free throws by Loyola's Trenese Smith, Lindsey Wilson junior Bethany Spillman missed the would-be game-tying three pointer as time expired to end the Blue Raider comeback.
Trailing 60-40 with a little more than 14 minutes left in the game, the Blue Raiders mounted a charge over the next four minutes to cut into the Wolfpack (6-4) lead.
Lindsey Wilson junior Viktoria Krell scored eight of her game-high 30 points during a 14-2 run to cut the Loyola lead to 62-54 with 10 minutes left. Krell's 30 points matched her career-high from last season.
The two teams exchanged baskets over the next eight minutes before the Blue Raiders made one final run.
Lindsey Wilson freshman Kasey Litzinger sliced the lead to 74-71 with a basket in the paint with 50.4 seconds left. Litzinger finished with 10 points.
Following a Wolfpack turnover, Krell scored a put-back basket with 15.3 seconds left to cut the lead to 74-73 prior to the Smith free throws. Krell finished with her eighth double-double of the season pulling down 10 rebounds to go along with her 30 points.
One day after the Blue Raider defense held its opponent to 30 percent shooting, No. 21-ranked Loyola shot 53.8 percent (28-of-52). The Wolfpack made eight of their first nine shots to open the game.
Lindsey Wilson also shot the ball well from the field making 53.7 percent (29-of-54) but made just 11 of its 19 free throws (57.9 percent). Loyola made 12-of-16 freebies.
Smith led four Wolfpack players in double digits with 19 points.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Saturday, January 9, as the Blue Raiders host Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University at 1 p.m. CT at Biggers Sports Center.
