Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Lindsey Wilson College offense rarely got going against Cumberland (Tenn.) University as the Bulldogs outgained the Blue Raiders 445-130 in total offense en route to a 23-7 win on Saturday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium
Bulldog quarterback Curt Bureau completed 22-of-34 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown, while running back Lemeco Miller finished with 84 yards on nine attempts with a touchdown.
Lindsey Wilson's Ricky Bowling threw for 83 yards on 8-of-14 passing, while Greg Young completed 8-of-13 passes for 69 yards.
On a quiet day, Lindsey Wilson receiver Victor Moulden generated the most offense with 52 yards receiving on six catches.
Cumberland got into the end zone quickly, putting up a 7-0 lead with 12 minutes and 35 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter after Bureau hit Mitch Reynolds for a 35-yard pass down to the two-yard line. From there, running back Kwamane Howard went untouched on a rush to the outside for the score.
After a quick three and out from the Lindsey Wilson offense, another pair of legs from the stable of Cumberland running backs, Miller, took a pitch 35 yards to put the Bulldogs in front 13-0 after the extra point by Jared White sailed wide.
It was a rough first quarter for Lindsey Wilson as Cumberland took advantage of some big plays to build a 179-14 yard advantage in total offense. Amongst those yards were 10 first downs for Cumberland, while Lindsey Wilson managed just one.
Bureau struck again with 8:28 to play in the first half with a 30-yard scoring strike to Da'Juan Manning in the end zone to put Cumberland in front 20-0. At the time of the score, Bureau was 10-for-11 through the air for 146 yards.
Bureau showed a connection with his receivers in the first half that proved hard to stop for the Blue Raiders.
As soon as the Bulldogs regained possession of the ball, Mureau connected with Mike Moore on a 49-yard pass to put Cumberland deep into Lindsey Wilson territory. The Bulldog drive ended with a 25-yard field goal for White to give Cumberland a 23-0 advantage with 46 seconds to play in the half.
Neither team threatened to score after halftime until Cumberland went on an eight-play drive down to the Lindsey Wilson seven-yard line where White missed the 24-yard field-goal attempt with 1:25 left to play in the third quarter.
With Lindsey Wilson looking to get some momentum going deep on the Cumberland side of the field, Young's pass was tipped by a Bulldog defender before being intercepted by Todd Holman at the 21-yard line, giving Cumberland great field position to add to its lead.
Once again, the Blue Raider defense stepped up in the second half, forcing Cumberland to go for it on a fourth and 20 situation that it didn't convert to keep the deficit at just 23 points.
In the first moment of positive offense for Lindsey Wilson in the second half, Moulden caught a tipped pass intended for Cameron Zuehlsdorf just shy of the first down, allowing a hard snap count by Bowling to cause Cumberland to jump off sides for the first down.
Once across midfield, Bowling finally got time to make a play, heaving a 44-yard touchdown pass to Matt Powers to put the Blue Raiders within two possessions 23-7 with 9:19 to play in the game.
Lindsey Wilson put together 69 yards of total offense on the scoring drive. Before the drive began, the Blue Raiders had tallied just 20 yards of positive yardage.
Cumberland drove down to the Lindsey Wilson 27 yard line where White attempted a 37-yard field goal to make it a three-possession game. Luckily for the Blue Raiders the kick went wide left, leaving a glimpse of hope for a comeback with less than five minutes to play.
Dealt with a fourth down and 16 yards to go, Young kept the drive alive with a first-down pass to Chris Dobbins with less than two minutes to play. Then with 58 seconds on the clock, Young passed for another new set of downs to Moulden before things fell apart on the drive.
On first down, Bulldog Josh Walker sacked young at the Cumberland 38 yard line, forcing a timeout by the Blue Raiders with 51 seconds on the clock. Then there were back-to-back sacks as Josh Smith and B.J. Stewart both drug down Young to make it fourth and 21.
Young's last attempt was complete to Moulden but well short of the first down, allowing Cumberland to run out the final seconds of the game for the 23-7 win.
