JACKSON, Tenn. -- Viktoria Krell put together a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, but it was not enough to hold off No. 1-seed Vanguard (Calif.) University as the Lions topped Lindsey Wilson College 64-57 in overtime on Thursday in the first round of the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship at Oman Arena.

Bridgette Reyes and Rachel Copeland paced Vanguard with 19 and 11 points, respectively. Jaclyn Blied pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Copeland knocked down 3-of-10 3-pointers, as she was the only Lion to hit more than one shot from behind the arc.

Kasey Litzinger was the only other Blue Raider in double figures scoring with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Sierra Rambert put together a complete performance of nine points and eight rebounds.

After trailing by four points (57-53) with 1:13 to play in regulation, Krell willed in a hook shot through a Vanguard double team, then Diondra Anthony hit a running jumper in the paint as time expired to send the Blue Raiders into overtime against the third ranked team in the country.

The extra period, however, doomed Lindsey Wilson as it was held without a point for the entire five minutes as Vanguard (26-2, 18-2 GSAC) outscored the Blue Raiders 7-0 to seal the win.

Both teams started the game slow, as Lindsey Waters ended the scoring draught with a put back after two minutes of scoreless basketball. Then Rambert broke free for back-to-back layups to give the Blue Raiders a 6-0 lead to start the game.

Vanguard responded quickly with a jumper from the free-throw line and a 3-pointer to climb within one 6-5. Nondi Johnson followed a few minutes later with a wide-open layup to give Vanguard its first lead of the game 11-10.

Lindsey Wilson went without a field goal over the next six minutes until Litzinger knocked down a 3-pointer and hit a layup after a missed free throw that she was fouled on. The freshman hit the ensuing free throw to pull Lindsey Wilson within one (22-21) with three minutes to play in the half.

Krell hit a layup on a perfect pass from Litzinger to tie the game at 25 with 15 seconds to play, allowing Lindsey Wilson to hold off the Lions and enter halftime knotted at 25.

The Blue Raiders and Lions traded baskets during the start of the second half until Vanguard went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 37-31. The Blue Raiders, however, responded with a 4-0 run of their own with 12 minutes to play to pull within two (37-35).

Led by a wide-open layup by Krell, Lindsey Wilson extended its run to 8-0 and pulled in front 39-37. The lead held up until Vanguard began to attack the basket late in the game to come up with back-to-back layups for a 52-48 lead with four minutes to play in the game.

With under a minute left in the game, Krell overcame a fierce double team by the Lions to throw in a hook shoot from just outside the paint to climb within two points 57-55 with 46.5 seconds to play.

Vanguard came up empty on its next possession, giving Lindsey Wilson 15 seconds to tie the game with a field goal or win with a 3-pointer. Anthony started with the ball at the top of the key and drove into the paint, heaving a shot in to tie the game. The Lions threw a shot from near full-court range towards its basket to no avail as time expired in regulation.

Lindsey Wilson out-rebounded Vanguard 49-41 and outshot the Lions from the field 41.4 percent to 32.4. Both teams struggled from behind the arc as Lindsey Wilson hit just 2-of-13 3-pointers and Vanguard connected on 5-of-29.

The Lions hit 13-of-17 free throws (76.5 percent), compared to just 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) for Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders end their season with a 20-12 overall record and 8-6 mark in conference play.
