Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball, Lose 82-59 to Campbellsville

Box Score

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Whitney Ballinger -- the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year -- scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help No. 1-seed Campbellsville (Ky.) University beat the No. 4-seed Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team 82-59 on Friday in the semifinals of the MSC Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Courtney Danis and Wendi Messer had 14 points each and Melly Heaton added 10 for Campbellsville (31-1), which won its third straight against the Blue Raiders this season.

The Lady Tigers advance to the championship game where they will face either No. 2-seed University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) or No. 6-seed Pikeville (Ky.) College at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 6.

Lindsey Waters and Viktoria Krell scored 14 points each as well, while Diondra Anthony added nine for the Blue Raiders (20-11), who were ranked as high as No. 17 in the country this season.

Campbellsville used an 18-2 run to start the game, putting Lindsey Wilson in comeback-mode the rest of the way. A quick 8-2 scoring burst in favor of the Blue Raiders helped the game not get out of hand as Krell and Anthony hit back-to-back shots to pull within 12 (22-10).

With the momentum swinging towards Lindsey Wilson, Mackenzie Lee hit a 3-pointer to slow the run and put the Lady Tigers back out in front by 15 (25-10) with just under nine minutes left in the half.

Lindsey Wilson, however, trimmed the deficit to 12 with four minutes to play, then got five points on a layup and 3-pointer by Sarah Gills to pull within nine (30-21).

With a chance to enter halftime down by just 10 points, Campbellsville had a banked three go down by T.J. Thomas at the buzzer after Waters lost control of the ball in the paint.

Lindsey Wilson clawed within eight with 16:33 to play in the game after a basket by Waters in the paint. Eight points would be the closest the Blue Raiders got within after the opening burst by the Lady Tigers stunned them at the start.

The eight point deficit was short lived, however, as Ballinger continued to be unstoppable, helping Campbellsville build its lead back to 20 (69-49) with six minutes to play in the game.

A basket from behind the arc by Alexia Williams with 47 seconds to play pushed the Lady Tigers ahead 82-57, with the 25-point lead being the largest of the game.

Lindsey Wilson shot 43.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from behind the arc. Campbellsville finished shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 40.0 percent (10-of-25) on threes.

Rebounding may have been the biggest disadvantage for the Blue Raiders as they were abused on the glass by the Lady Tigers 38-28, including a 15-9 advantage on offensive boards.

Lindsey Wilson will now wait and see if they are selected for an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The field will be announced on Tuesday, March 9.
