COLUMBIA, Ky. - With the Lindsey Wilson College football team's offense on cruise control -- outgaining Southern Virginia University 509-83 in total yards -- the Blue Raiders registered the first win for the resurrected program 44-3 against the Knights on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.

Perfect timing was the theme of the day. From the Lindsey Wilson quarterbacks -- completing 18-of-29 passes for 383 yards -- to a thunderstorm that waited to deliver its fiercest moments when the teams were undercover at halftime. The half was extended by 10 minutes due to a severe thunderstorm that passed through the area at the break.

The offense ran so efficiently that the pass-first theme for the Blue Raiders (1-1) was shelved in the fourth quarter as they ran the ball 39 times on the day, including 16 carries in the final 15 minutes.

"Anytime we're rushing the ball that much, it's probably a good thing," Lindsey Wilson head coach Chris Oliver said. "We strive for a balance offense and today we were successful in both capacities."

The Lindsey Wilson freshmen quarterback duo of Ricky Bowling and Greg Young were outstanding all day. Bowling finished the game for the Blue Raiders completing 8-of-13 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Young connected on 10-of-16 passes for 189 yards and two scores.

Not even a minute had run off the clock at the start of the game before it started to feel like it could be the Blue Raiders' day.

Freshman Richard Kennedy -- who scored the program's first touchdown last week with a 94-yard kickoff return -- caught a pass from Bowling and sprinted all the way to the end zone for a 65-yard score 51 seconds into the game.

"Richard's electric with the ball in his hands," Oliver said. "He's a special player who simply made some terrific plays today."

Kennedy finished the game with 95 yards rushing and 121 yards receiving, scoring twice -- once through the air and one on the ground.

Kennedy's touchdown was one of four scores that went for more than 60 yards on the day. The final two touchdowns came on a one-yard fade route to freshman tight end Lee Hargis and a 46-yard touchdown catch by freshman Matt Powers.

Freshman wide out Victor Moulden provided the longest play of the day, turning a short screen pass from Young into a 79-yard touchdown romp in the first quarter to make the score 14-0 after the successful extra point by freshman kicker Mark Corbett.

"We want to get all the big plays we can, but we can't live solely off the big play," Oliver explained. "We have to work on being more consistent on offense so when you don't get that 60 or 70-yard play, you can still move the chains and get first downs."

After his opening heroics, Kennedy got back into scoring mode with a 63-yard rush for a touchdown in the third quarter to make the score 35-3.

Southern Virginia (1-2) scored its lone points with a 31-yard field goal by Tyler Bowen in the second quarter.

Lindsey Wilson led 21-3 at halftime. Following the lightning delay, the Blue Raiders outscored the Knights 23-0 the rest of the way.

"It's great to come out and get the first win for our program," Oliver said. "Our guys played hard, but I think we're just scratching the surface.

"I'm excited for our kids; they've worked so hard the last five weeks, hoping for a day like today."
