Notre Dame Outlasts Football 14-10, Steals Win in Historic Season Opener

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Playing its first game in 75 years, the Lindsey Wilson College football team had more total yards, first downs and fewer penalties than Notre Dame (Ohio) College, but couldn't turn those statistical advantages into a win, losing 14-10 on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.

Mark Corbett put his name into the record books at the 10:06 mark of the first period as his 43-yard field goal put Lindsey Wilson (0-1) in front 3-0, while also marking the first points scored in Blue Raider varsity-football history.

Lindsey Wilson, however, wouldn't score again until late in the third quarter after Notre Dame had scored a pair touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead.

Just after Falcon Pedro Powell punched in a score from one-yard out in the third quarter, Blue Raider running back Richard Kennedy provided some fireworks with a 94-yard kickoff return to bring Lindsey Wilson within four.

Neither team came up with any points in the fourth quarter, allowing the Falcons to secure the win. For Notre Dame, also a first year varsity program, the win was its first in school history as it improved to 1-1 overall.

Trailing 14-10 late in the fourth quarter, the Lindsey Wilson defense stepped up to give its offense a chance to win the game.

On fourth and one inside the Notre Dame 20-yard line, wide receiver Matt Powers took a handoff to the outside where he was drug out of bounds by the facemask. The personal foul penalty was called, extending the Blue Raider drive.

Despite the second life after the penalty, the rest of the drive was filled with errors. Quarterback Ricky Bowling scrambled for a five-yard loss, was sacked for a loss of 11 more, threw an incomplete pass and then was intercepted.

Bowling finished completing 11-of-24 passes for 88 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. Greg Young completed 5-of-6 passes for 74 yards and an interception.

James Flowers took the bulk of the snaps for Notre Dame, completing 7-of-19 passes for 61 yards. Falcon running back Khalid Harrison rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Pedro Powell also scored a touchdown, rushing for just six yards on four carries.

Lindsey Wilson's De Wallace was the leading rusher in the game with 54 yards on 15 carries, while Cameron Zuehlsdorf was the leading receiver with three catches for 57 yards.

The Blue Raiders amassed 194 yards of total offense, while Notre Dame was a few yards behind with 191. Lindsey Wilson led in passing yards 162-85, while the Falcons held the rushing advantage 106-32.

Notre Dame finished the game turnover free, while the Blue Raiders gave away two interceptions and a pair of fumbles.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 11 against Southern Virginia University at Blue Raider Stadium.
