No. 13 Women's Basketball Loses Back-and-Forth Battle with Shawnee State 72-69

Box Score

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Viktoria Krell scored a game-high 28 points and Ashley Rainey added a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to slow the hot 3-point shooting of Shawnee State (Ohio) University as it topped the Blue Raiders 72-69 on Thursday at the Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium.

Abby Ballman led the way for Shawnee State (14-4, 5-1 MSC) with 19 points on 4-of-5 3-point shooting and Jill Cropper was the only other Bear in double figures with 12 points. Ballman also added six assists, three steals and two blocks in the win.

Juniors Michelle Copley and Tiffany Williams each added nine points on three 3-pointers.

There was little defense over the first 10 minutes of the game as the Bears and Blue Raiders traded baskets for a 20-20 tie. Not a lot changed over the next 10 either as the teams entered halftime knotted at 33.

The largest lead of the first half was five points for Lindsey Wilson (12-4, 4-2 MSC) which it reached by the aid of two 3-pointers from junior Tiffany Williams. Shawnee State was whistled for just one foul in the half, while the Blue Raiders were whistled for six fouls.

Shawnee State used those fouls to get to the free-throw line for seven attempts, making all but one to help limit any Blue Raider runs.

In the second half the foul situation started to lean more towards Lindsey Wilson but that didn't affect the scoreboard as the game remained tight the entire half.

After a brief six-point lead for the Blue Raiders, Shawnee State fired back to tie the game with one minute to play on a pair of free throws by Alex Pohl. Tied at 67-67, Ballman ripped a steal for an uncontested layup with 13 seconds to play.

Krell scored on the next possession to bring Lindsey Wilson within one. Cropper went to the free throw line with 2.2 seconds on the clock, hitting both shots to go up 72-69 and Sarah Gillis' heave from half court bounced hard off the backboard as time expired.

The Bears outshot the Blue Raiders 45.5 percent to 44.3 percent, while both teams shot lights out from behind the arc with Shawnee State shooting 50.0 percent (9-of-18) and Lindsey Wilson at 46.7 percent (7-of-15). The Blue Raiders held the advantage on the glass 39-28.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Georgetown (Ky.) College.
