No. 25 Women's Basketball Runs Past No. 3 Azusa Pacific 80-69

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Using a 19-2 run in the second half and getting 26 points and nine rebounds from Ashley Rainey, the 25th ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team ran past third ranked Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University 80-69 on Saturday in the Citizens Bank and Trust Company Holiday Hoops Classic hosted by Campbellsville (Ky.) University at the Powell Athletics Center.

Playing in her first game of the season after becoming eligible after the fall semester, Rainey wasted no time looking like the All-American player she proved to be a year ago.

The junior from Bowling Green, Ky., knocked down 8-of-13 shots from the field and hit all 10 of her free throws to lead Lindsey Wilson. Freshman Monny Niamke, after being held scoreless against Bethel (Tenn,) on Friday, added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists to the winning effort.

Amber Williams paced the Cougars with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Tianna Jones added 15 points, but turned the ball over five times.

Turnovers were the theme of the night, despite the positive outcome for Lindsey Wilson, at times the game was sloppy to watch.

The Blue Raiders filled the stat sheet with 20 turnovers and Azusa Pacific didn't fare much better with 18. The Cougars did lead the rebounding battle 39-31, but their 37.3 percent shooting mark from the field negated that advantage.

Lindsey Wilson connected on 46.3 percent of its field goals and knocked down 8-of-18 3-pointers for 44.4 percent to push past the Cougars.

Those high shooting marks led to the second-half run where Lindsey Wilson took a 42-40 lead and turned it into a 61-42 advantage after junior Sarah Gillis hit one of her three 3-pointers in the game.

Azusa Pacific worked the lead down to 11 points with just under three minutes to play and eventually down to as little as nine points with under a minute to go, but Lindsey Wilson senior Ashley Franklin and junior Stacia Jo Hill both hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6 p.m. CT on Dec. 15 against Ohio Christian University in Biggers Sports Center for the first of three straight contests at home.
