No. 14 Women's Basketball Outlasts UVa.-Wise 60-55

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Fourteenth ranked Lindsey Wilson College played from behind for a majority of the game, but once it took a lead with three minutes to play on a 3-pointer by Sarah Gillis it never looked back to knock off the University of Virginia's College at Wise 60-55 on Thursday in Mid-South Conference women's basketball action at Biggers Sports Center.

Freshman Monny Niamke led the Blue Raiders with 17 points while senior Ashley Franklin added 14 and sophomore Jasmine Brimm tallied 13 and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Cavaliers' Chelsea Cluesman led all scorers with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half as the Cavaliers shot off to a 23-8 lead behind multiple easy baskets in the paint.

To climb back within single digits before halftime Lindsey Wilson got a lift from its three-point shooting. Niamke hit a pair of threes during the run and junior Sarah Gillis, senior Tiffany Williams and junior Stacia Jo Hill all knocked down a three in the half.

By halftime the Cavalier lead was brought down to eight as Lindsey Wilson had to compete with their 60.9 percent showing from the field and 20-12 rebound advantage.

Not helping matters the Blue Raiders managed to shoot just 26.7 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from behind the arc in the half.

For as sloppy as the first half was for Lindsey Wilson, everything seemed to go right in the game's late stages. The Blue Raiders outscored UVa.-Wise in the half 38-25.

The comeback was slow and methodical but eventually with just under three minutes to play Niamke connected on a layup to knot the score at 54.

Over the final three minutes the Cavaliers would score just one more point as Gillis knocked down a timely three for Lindsey Wilson and Franklin scored a second-chance basket to put the game away.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday against the University of Pikeville in Biggers Sports Center.
