No. 12 Women's Basketball Drops 73-72 Decision at Cumberlands

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- A last-second runner in the paint by Diondra Anthony rattled off the rim, giving the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) a 73-72 win over the 12th ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team on Saturday at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Anthony was superb the entire contest for Lindsey Wilson (17-6, 8-4 MSC), scoring a career-high 24 points, while sophomore Ashley Rainey backed her up with a quiet 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Lauren Wombles paced the Patriots with 21 points and Samantha Coleman added 19 in the win.

The Patriots started the game on a hot streak, scoring 11 straight points on three 3-pointers to lead the Blue Raiders 11-0. Luckily for Lindsey Wilson, it found a way to go on a 15-5 run of its own to pull within one, 16-15, with 11:39 to play in the first half.

A pair of free throws by sophomore Sarah Gillis gave Lindsey Wilson its first lead at 17-16. The rest of the half was an evenly played affair with the Blue Raiders going into halftime tied at 33-33.

After opening the game with three baskets from beyond the arc, the Patriots struggled the rest of the half, going 5-for-16 from three for 31.3 percent. The Blue Raiders took just four threes in the opening half, hitting half of them.

Anthony delivered a runner in the lane in the second half to give Lindsey Wilson its largest lead to that point at three points, but the Patriots responded with a run capped by a three from Jessica Upchurch to march back ahead by five, 51-46, with 11:39 to play.

Upchurch stepped to the free-throw line near the five-minute mark and made a pair to push Cumberlands (14-10, 8-4 MSC) in front by seven as Lindsey Wilson left the zone defense it utilized most of the half and threw out man-to-man pressure.

The switch in defense worked as Rainey took a steal coast-to-coast for a layup, followed by a Spillman 3-pointer and layup from Anthony to tie the game again with just over two minutes to play.

Quattrociocchi stepped up for the patriots at the one-minute mark, knocking down a deep 3-pointer to put Cumberlands in front 71-68. Anthony drove down the lane to knock down a jumper to pull within one on the next possession.

As Cumberlands attempted to run down the clock with 39 seconds to play and a full shot clock, Gillis stole the ball at the top of the key and hit a layup with 24 seconds on the clock to go up 73-72. Adding to the back and forth battle down the stretch, Wombles came up with a tough shot in the paint of her own to put the Patriots back in front.

Anthony attempted to get towards the basket for a shot to take the lead, but got bumped in the lane and lost the ball, forcing Krell to foul and send Wombles to the line for bonus free throws.

Wombles missed the first shot, leading to the Anthony attempt that fell short, giving Cumberlands the win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 5 p.m. CT on Feb. 10 at the West Virginia Institute of Technology.
