Rainey Scores 27 to Help Women's Basketball Top Southern Nazarene 63-56

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn. -- Ashley Rainey exploded for 20 second-half points to finish with 27 and lead the fourth seeded Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team to a 63-56 win against fifth seeded Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University on Thursday in the NAIA National Championship at Oman Arena.

Senior Viktoria Krell added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and her classmates Diondra Anthony added eight and Bethany Spillman scored 10 points.

Logan Martin paced the Crimson Storm with 21 points on three 3-pointers and Abbey Marra added 13 points in the loss.

While the Blue Raiders won by a comfortable seven points, the game had plenty of uncomfortable moments for both teams with Lindsey Wilson trailing by as many as 15 points and the Crimson Storm trailing by as many as 10 in a game full of runs.

Despite a dismal performance from behind the arc, Lindsey Wilson built a six point lead at 12-6 early in the first half by dissecting the Crimson Storm zone for easy baskets by Krell and Rainey.

It also didn't hurt that Martin struggled to get things going for the Southern Nazarerne offense through the first 10 minutes of the half. The problem was Martin's drought didn't last long as the junior got loose for a pair of 3-pointers and a 6-of-6 showing from the free-throw line to lead the Crimson Storm with 12 points at halftime.

Martin, along with reserve Ashley Mantooth who added four points, helped Southern Nazarene go on a 13-0 run from the 8:15 mark to 3:41. At the start of the run the Blue Raiders led 23-17 but found themselves down 30-23 before scoring its next basket.

Oumoul Thiam closed the first half with a pair of 3-pointers from the corner to help the Crimson Storm enter halftime up 37-28 after Lindsey Wilson hit just 1-of-6 tries from behind the arc in the half for 16.7 percent.

Less than five minutes into the second half the Crimson Storm extended their lead to 15 points (46-31) and looked to be on the move to the second round without much of an attack from the Blue Raiders.

That all changed over the next 14 minutes as Lindsey Wilson outscored Southern Nazarene 28-7 to take a 59-53 lead with a minute and a half to play.

Rainey was huge in the comeback, dominating the post for 20 second-half points and junior Michelle Copley and Spillman both knocked down 3-pointers down the stretch to help Lindsey Wilson finally put the Crimson Storm away in a back-and-forth battle.

The Blue Raiders outshot Southern Nazarene from the field 44.0 to 35.1 percent, but struggled to just 16.7 percent from three compared to 31.6 percent by the Crimson Storm. Lindsey Wilson did outrebound Southern Nazarene 40-33 to aid in the second-half comeback.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2:15 p.m. CT on Friday against the winner of No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University and No. 8 seed Belhaven (Miss.) University.
