Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Georgetown (Ky.) College avenged a 5-3 loss on March 12 in the Auburn Montgomery Invitational with a 5-4 decision against the Lindsey Wilson College men's tennis team on Tuesday in the Mid-South Conference home opener at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders went into the No. 6 singles match tied with the Tigers 4-4, but sixth seeded freshman Joe Cox couldn't get past Alec Lewis, losing 6-1, 6-0 to give Georgetown (1-4, 1-0 MSC) the win. The loss was the first to an MSC opponent since University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) topped the Blue Raiders 6-3 on Feb. 21, 2003.
Lindsey Wilson (2-4, 0-1 MSC) ended doubles play down 2-1 after picking up the lone win at the No. 2 doubles' spot. Freshman Fabricio Moraes and sophomore Victor Saez defeated Jose Baeza and Ross Phelps 8-0 to claim the point.
While Lindsey Wilson lost the third doubles' match 8-1, it missed a great chance at adding a win in the top doubles' spot. Seniors Andrews Moraes and Andre Santos battled to a 9-8 (8-6) loss at the top spot against Benjamin Aspillaga and Justin Harris of Georgetown.
Wins at Nos. one, two and three singles helped the Blue Raiders to a 4-2 advantage before losses at second and fifth seed along with Cox's loss at sixth gave them the loss.
Morales won for Lindsey Wilson at No. 1 6-1, 6-2 against Aspillaga, while Moraes topped Gustavo Echeverria 6-1, 6-3 and Santos came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Harris to give Lindsey Wilson its brief lead.
Before Cox's loss, Lindsey Wilson lost a tough match at No. 2 singles as Saez lost in three sets to Baeza 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3. Freshman Clinton Berry lost for the Blue Raiders at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-3.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2:30 p.m. CT on March 25 at Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College.
