Men's Tennis Beats Cumberlands 5-2 to Advance to Semifinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's tennis team advanced into the NAIA Qualifying Tournament semifinals with a 5-2 win over University of the Cumberlands today at Champions Club.

No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson faces third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan College at 7:30 a.m. CT on Saturday. April 30 in one of the semifinal matches. Top-seeded Union (Ky.) College plays fourth-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) University in the other semifinal on Saturday.

The tournament championship match is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT. The winner earns an automatic bid into next month's NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala.

Today, the Blue Raiders (12-5) jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play.

Lindsey Wilson's top-seeded tandem of Andrews Moraes and Andre Santos won 9-8 (6) over Cumberlands' Guillermo Alvarez and Danilo Garcia and the Blue Raiders second-seeded doubles team Fabricio Morales and Victor Saez beat Oscar Pantoja and Jerrid Neeley 8-2 for two points.

Cumberlands' David Ujueta and Steffan Crowe won 8-3 over Joe Cox and Clinton Berry to end doubles play at 2-1.

The Blue Raiders wasted little time in singles play winning at the one, two and four seeds -- all in straight sets.

Santos -- the MSC Player of the Year -- won his match and No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0 over Ujueta while Morales beat Pantoja 6-1, 6-0 at the top singles and Moraes handled Alvarez 6-3, 6-2 to beat the Patriots (4-16) for the third time this season.

The Blue Raiders advance to face Tennessee Wesleyan -- a team they beat 6-3 on April 7 in Columbia -- tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. CT at Champions Club.
