Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - In what could have been a disastrous start to its appearance in the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship, 14th seeded Lindsey Wilson College fought through a pair of tie-break doubles' wins to help fend off 19th seeded Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College 6-3 on Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The score could have easily been 2-1 in favor of Lewis-Clark (10-9) after doubles' action, but the Blue Raiders withstood comeback rallies from the Warriors at the No. 1 and No. 2 seed matches to help gain the early advantage.
Freshman duo Joe Cox and Clinton Berry lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles to Cesar Uauy and Lincoln Gay, leaving the top two Lindsey Wilson (15-5) doubles' teams in need of tie-break wins.
Newcomer Fabricio Morales and sophomore Victor Saez let a 7-3 lead at No. 2 slip away as the Warrior's pair of Viktor Svoboda and Anders Tischer tied the match at 8-8 after breaking serve three straight times before the Blue Raider tandem took over in the tie break for a 9-8 (4) win.
Seniors Andrews Moraes and Andre Santos had a similar route to a win at the top seed, allowing Lewis-Clark's Ivan Krijanto and Benjamin Robert to erase a two-game deficit and force a tie break at 8-8 which Lindsey Wilson easily won for a 9-8 (3) decision.
Needing just three wins in singles' play to gain the five overall wins needed to advance, the match didn't start out in favor of the Blue Raiders as Berry lost at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1 to Benjamin Robert and Cox dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Svoboda at No. 5.
Trailing the overall match score 3-2, Lindsey Wilson got just what it needed with wins at the top four singles' spots.
Morales topped Krijanto 6-4, 6-4 at No.1, Moraes willed his way to a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win against Tischer at No. 2 and Saez won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 against Uauy at No. 3. Santos won a long match against Oliver Sindayihaya 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4 against an opponent who only played singles on the day.
With the first-round win, Lindsey Wilson advances to the second round where it faces No. 3 seed Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
