Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. -- It was a tale of two halves today as the Lindsey Wilson College football team rallied to beat host Southern Virginia University 33-25 at Robert E. Williams Field.
The Blue Raiders erased a 12-point halftime deficit -- the largest come-from-behind win in LWC history -- to pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-1.
The Lindsey Wilson defense dominated Southern Virginia in the second half after giving up 25 first half points. After the break, the Blue Raider defense limited the Knights (0-3) to just 126 total yards of offense and no points.
While the Lindsey Wilson defense shut the Knights down in the second half, the Blue Raider offense started to convert their scoring opportunities into touchdowns after settling for a pair of redzone field goals in the first quarter.
Trailing 25-13 at the half, the Lindsey Wilson defense set the tone for the rest of the game forcing the Knights into a three and out on the first offensive possession of the half.
The Blue Raider offense started its comeback with a 12-play, 86-yard drive to cut the Knight lead in half at 25-19. Sophomore running back Dakota Brown capped the drive with his first touchdown run of the season with a 13-yard scamper. Brown finished with 79 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.
On the subsequent Southern Virginia drive, the Blue Raiders again forced the Knights offense into a punt setting up another lengthy Blue Raider drive.
Over the next 5:22, Lindsey Wilson marched down the field and converted its second straight touchdown drive to take a 26-25 lead. On the game-winning drive, the Blue Raiders covered 75 yards on 15 plays with sophomore quarterback Greg Young scoring on a four-yard keeper to tie the game at 25-25. Sophomore kicker Mark Corbett put the Blue Raiders up for good with the extra point.
Now protecting the lead the Blue Raider defense continued to limit the Knights' success. In the second half, Southern Virginia ran just nine total plays in Lindsey Wilson territory, never getting beyond the Lindsey Wilson 38-yard line. Sophomore linebacker Aaron Taylor led the defensive charge with a game-high 14 tackles, including two for a loss. He also recorded his first-career interception.
The Blue Raiders put the game on ice with 3:01 left as freshman running back Tyrome Lott scored his first career touchdown with a 37-yard run to give Lindsey Wilson the 33-25 lead. Lott finished the game with a career-high 103 rushing yards.
Lott's big afternoon helped the Blue Raiders total a season-best 209 yards on the ground. Freshman quarterback Branden Cresap led the balance offensive attack connecting on 25-of-44 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown.
Southern Virginia finished with 388 total yards of offense.
The win is the third straight for the Blue Raiders on the road dating back to last season and the second straight over Southern Virginia.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 17, as the Blue Raiders host Belhaven (Miss.) University at Blue Raider Stadium.
