Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Capped off by a 75-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter, Campbellsville (Ky.) University's Wayne Coffee finished with 205 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the 24th ranked Tigers to a 56-25 win against the Lindsey Wilson College football team on Saturday night at Blue Raider Stadium.
Tiger junior quarterback Will Warf had a big night as well, completing 20-of-36 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.
Lindsey Wilson freshman Branden Cresap went through the air 43 times, completing 21 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns and two picks.
The Blue Raiders bright spot on offense was sophomore wide receiver Matt Powers who finished with nine catches for 165 yards and a touchdown.
While Campbellsville finished with the 31-point win, the start of the game started as bizarrely as possible, giving off the impression that it would be close all night.
After an illegal block in the back penalty on the opening kickoff, Campbellsville was forced to start its drive from its own seven yard line where it fumbled the first snap into the back of the end zone for a safety.
On the third play of its next drive, Campbellsville gave the Blue Raiders another gift with a fumble recovered by sophomore Sam Wilson that set up a drive ending with a 27-yard field goal by Blue Raider sophomore Mark Corbett.
But after the bizarre start, and leading 5-0 six minutes into the first quarter, Lindsey Wilson started to lose its early momentum when Warf hit freshman Demytreus Gipson for an 18-yard touchdown strike that started the Tigers towards 21 straight unanswered points.
Campbellsville went into halftime up 28-12 after sophomore Dakota Brown rushed for the Blue Raiders only touchdown of the half and Warf finished the first-half scoring with a 66-yard pass to junior Demetric Ray.
While Campbellsville outscored Lindsey Wilson 28-13 in the second half, nearly mirroring play in the first half, the Blue Raiders did cut the deficit to nine at 28-19 after Cresap hit freshman Shannon Coofer on a 12-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter.
The momentum change was short lived however as disaster struck on the next two Lindsey Wilson possessions with Cresap being picked off for a touchdown on his next two pass attempts.
The first pick was by Tiger freshman Leon Melvin that he took 20 yard into the end zone, followed by senior Dwight Houston picking off a pass near the line of scrimmage that he carried in from 26-yards out.
Just like that Campbellsville was looking at a 42-19 lead after being up just nine points four minutes ago.
Lindsey Wilson scored its last touchdown early in the fourth quarter as Cresap hit Powers all alone for a 60-yard touchdown pass. Campbellsville, however, added two more touchdowns to finish with the final 56-25 advantage.
The game, which lasted three hours and 12 minutes after a 50 minute first quarter, saw a combined 21 penalties issued, with 15 coming against Campbellsville for 215 yards.
Still the Tigers found a way to be effective despite the miscues, amassing 618 yards of total offense compared to 381 for Lindsey Wilson.
Sophomore Aaron Taylor paced the Blue Raider defense with six tackles, a sack, fumble recovery and a broken up pass, while newcomer Josh Johnson came up with an interception for Lindsey Wilson.
Junior Earl McCann was all over the field for Campbellsville, tallying eight tackles, including three for a loss. Junior Derek Mincy finished with the Tigers' only sack.
Campbellsville finished with a balanced attack, gaining 380 yards through the air and 238 on the ground, while the Blue Raiders wrapped up the game with 311 passing yards, but just 70 yards rushing.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 12:30 p.m. CT on Sat., Oct. 8 at the University of Pikeville (Ky.). The next home game is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 against Kentucky Christian University for homecoming.
