COLUMBIA, Ky. – It was a clean sweep for the Lindsey Wilson College women's swimming team on Saturday, holding on for close victories against Campbellsville (Ky.) and Union (Ky.) College in tri-meet action at the Holloway Center Natatorium.
The Blue Raiders topped the Tigers 76-38 and edged the Bulldogs 62-55. The close win comes against a Union team that was ranked fifth in the NAIA in last season's final coaches' poll.
To earn the wins, the Blue Raiders got the help of six first-place finishes, including five individual wins and one relay.
Elena Nikolaeva played a large role in the success, being part of three first-place showings on the day.
Nikolaeva bettered her national "A" cut time in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of one minute and 2.04 seconds, which was good for first place. She backed that up with a win in the 200-back, touching the wall in 2:18.46.
The 200-medley relay team of Nikolaeva, Kate Spaulding, Susan Herrington and Paige Lewis too first place as well with a time of 2:00.24.
Herrington had another good showing in the 200-butterfly, posting a lifetime-best 2:25.87, which is less than a second off a national "B' cut.
Kelsey Marshall and Sarah Wood turned in the final two wins on Saturday. Marshall took first in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:39.85 and Wood won the 500-freestyle in 5:48.23.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Nov. 15-16 at the Brenau University Invitational in Gainesville, Ga., and won't return to its home pool until the Mid-South Conference Invitational on Feb. 8-9 in Columbia.
