Men's Tennis Claims Doubles' Point, Falls at EKU 6-1

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. -- A singles' sweep by Eastern Kentucky helped it towards a 6-1 win over the visiting Lindsey Wilson College men's tennis team on Friday afternoon at the Greg Adams Center.

The Blue Raiders found their only success in doubles' play, winning at the second and third seeds to claim the doubles' point against the NCAA Div. I opponent that has qualified for the NCAA Championship the past two seasons.

Gilles Cornelis and Fabricio Morales finished first at the No. 2 seed with an 8-6 win against Jan Dombrowski and Niklas Schroeder, while Marlon Dal Pont and Victor Saez won 9-7 at No. 3 against Craig Campbell and Carles Pons.

The Colonels claimed an 8-0 shutout win at the top doubles' seed with Philip Janz and Hugo Klientovsky topping Fernando Bogajo and Pablo Vilches.

Klientovsky's win at No. 1 singles clinched the match for Eastern Kentucky as it took a 4-1 overall lead after beating Bogajo 6-2, 6-1.

Leading up to that decision the Colonels' Parul Verma beat Saez 6-1, 6-0 at No.4, Janz topped Vilches 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Schroeder handled Morales 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2.

With the outcome already decided, the teams finished out the final two singles' matches.

Pons was a 6-1, 6-7, (10-4) winner over Cornelis at No. 5 and Joao Maio beat Dal Pont 4-6, 6-2, (15-13) at No. 6.

With the loss the Blue Raiders fall to 1-3 on the season, while Eastern Kentucky is 6-2.

"We came out of the gate firing and took the doubles' point but really lost steam as EKU came out strong in singles," said Lindsey Wilson head coach Daniel Finn. "We really had our chances today, but just didn't capitalize. I can't say enough about how hard we fight through these matches, we just keep playing better and better every day."

Lindsey Wilson is back on the courts at Noon CT on Saturday against Western Kentucky at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
