Men's Tennis Falters Late in 5-4 Loss to Southern Indiana

Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Southern Indiana University ended the Lindsey Wilson College men's tennis team's seven-match winning streak today with a 5-4 win over the Blue Raiders at the SIU Tennis Courts.

No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson (8-4) led early after winning two of the three doubles points. But Southern Indiana -- who is ranked third in NCAA Division II Midwest Region -- closed by winning four of the six singles matches to take the win.

The Blue Raiders sprinted out of the gates as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams won to give Lindsey Wilson the early 2-1 lead.

Victor Saez and Marlon Dal Pont ran their doubles record to 9-1 on the season with an 8-6 win over Ben Boesing and Rodrigo Flores at No. 3 doubles.

Fabricio Morales and Gilles Cornelis remained perfect as a tandem beating Diego Gimenez and Juan Quiroz 8-4 in the second-seeded doubles match. The Blue Raider pair is now 9-0 this season after beating Gimenez and Quiroz -- who are ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II.

The lone Southern Indiana (12-2) doubles point came from the top-seeded duo of Michael Kuzaj and Santiago Lopez who outlasted Lindsey Wilson's Fernando Bogajo and Pablo Vilches 8-5.

Up 2-1, the Blue Raiders continued to apply the pressure as Bogajo and Morales won their singles matches in straight sets to extend the lead to 4-1.

Bogajo beat Quiroz 6-3, 6-4 in the top singles match while Morales defeated Lopez 6-2, 6-1 to move the Blue Raiders within one point of claiming the match.

The point, however, would never come.

Boesing began the USI comeback with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Vilches. The win would be the first of four straight points for the Screaming Eagles en route to the comeback win.

Gimenez and Flores each won in straight sets while Kuzaj beat Saez 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to secure the win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Wednesday, March 14 as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 22-ranked Campbellsville University.
