Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- A battle between programs ranked in the NAIA's top 20 lived up to the billing as the 12th-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team overcame a feisty No. 16 Cumberland (Tenn.) team for a 7-2 win on Tuesday at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
"This was a great win for our team," said Lindsey Wilson head coach Daniel Finn. "We beat a very good team in a fiery environment. Add in the tough playing conditions with the wind and I am very proud of the way our players handled the pressure.
"I also want to thank all the fans that came out to support us. They really pushed us through the doubles when we needed it. We will enjoy this one tonight, then get ready for Bethel on Saturday."
Much to the fan's delight, the battle for the third doubles point was one of the most intense of the season.
The Blue Raiders went up 1-0 on Fabricio Morales and Gilles Cornelis' 8-5 win against Na'im Azhar and Jeremy Fleming at the No. 2 seed, but the Bulldogs' top-seeded pair of Manuel Marcelo and Evan Sanna evened things up with an 8-5 win against Fernando Bogajo and Fredrik Graaner.
To decide who would enter singles play with a lead, the third-seeded doubles match was decided by a tiebreaker.
In the end, it was the Lindsey Wilson duo of Victor Saez and Marlon Dal Pont that emerged victorious, edging Pedro Rodrigues and Andres Burgos 9-8 after rallying for a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker.
With the momentum of a 2-1 lead in the match on their side, the Blue Raiders went on to win five of the six singles matches.
Dal Pont, at the No. 6 seed, provided the clinching fifth point with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Cristhian Hernandez.
Prior to that, Morales started things off for Lindsey Wilson with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Azhar and Vilches earned a 7-6 (3), 6-2 decision against Rodrigues to put the Blue Raiders in front 4-1.
Marcelo recorded the lone singles win for the Bulldogs, beating Bogajo 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in the only three-set match of the day.
Lindsey Wilson is back on the courts at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday against Bethel (Tenn.) at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
