Football Wins Home-Opener 36-21 over Union on Saturday

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College used its ground attack to secure a 36-21 win over visiting Union (Ky.) College on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.

The Blue Raiders -- known more for their aerial assault -- rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns en route to their first win of the season. Union falls to 0-1 with the loss.

Sophomore Tyrome Lott led the Blue Raiders (1-1) with a season-high 81 rushing yards and two scores while junior Rome Cotton added 50 yards on six carries as the Blue Raiders ended the game out-rushing the Bulldogs 184-77.

While Lott and company took care of the offense, junior Corey Lillard and the Blue Raider defense stifled a Union offense that averaged nearly 400 yards a game last season. Union ended with 290 total yards of offense. Lillard led the Blue Raiders with eight tackles, including six solo tackles.

Lindsey Wilson -- who never trailed in the game -- turned an offensive mistake into a defensive opportunity to grab a 2-0 lead with a little more than four minutes left in the first quarter.

Following a Blue Raider fumble on the Union 1-yard line, Lindsey Wilson freshman Jerry Long provided a defensive gem as he burst through the Bulldogs' offensive line and brought senior Rob Brown down in the endzone for a safety. Long finished the game with four tackles, including a pair for a loss.

Lindsey Wilson added to their lead early in the second quarter as Shannon Coofer out-raced the Bulldog defense to the front pylon from the 3-yard line to extend the lead to 9-0.

Freshman receiver Tavis Elzy made the play of the drive to set up the first touchdown of the day. The Shelbyville, Ky., native undercut his defender for a 37-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Branden Cresap to set up the Blue Raiders inside the Union 5-yard line.

Union responded on its next drive as senior quarterback Mike Brinkley hit a streaking Domonique Jefferson for a 61-yard touchdown catch and run to cut the lead to 9-6. The Bulldogs missed the point after attempt. Brinkley ended the game 14-for-28 for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

The Blue Raiders wasted little time recapturing the momentum, thanks in large part to Coofer's 67-yard kickoff return to the Union 2-yard line. Cresap delivered a perfect strike to sophomore tight end Ben Madon on the next play to push the Blue Raiders to a 16-6 lead.

Cresap finished 13-of-29 for 142 yards and one touchdown. He also added a rushing touchdown to his day.

Lindsey Wilson grabbed a 23-6 lead heading into the locker room following a 12-play, 77-yard drive. Lott concluded the drive with his first score of the season to give the Blue Raiders a 17-point cushion.

Union -- who had lost six straight on the road entering today's game -- scored on back-to-back drives in the third quarter to cut into the Lindsey Wilson lead.

Brinkley connected with Jontrel Colbert for the first score and with William McGarvey for the second touchdown to cut the Blue Raider lead to 23-18 after three quarters.

That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get.

Lindsey Wilson used another lengthy drive -- 14-plays, 85-yards -- to once again seize control. Cresap capped off the impressive drive with a fourth-and-inches quarterback sneak to give the Blue Raiders a 29-18 lead.

Union managed to close within eight points (29-21) with a field goal midway through the final quarter. But a Lindsey Wilson defense stand in Union territory and subsequent insurance touchdown from Lott sealed the 36-21 win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 8 as the Blue Raiders travel to the University of Pikeville (Ky.).
