Brimm, Rainey Too Much for Rio Grande, Women's Basketball Wins 79-60

Box Score

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Jasmine Brimm poured in 29 points and Ashley Rainey tallied 26 points and 14 rebounds to lift Lindsey Wilson College over Rio Grande (Ohio) 79-60 on Saturday at Newt Oliver Arena.

Kate Hammond paced the RedStorm with a team-high 24 points as Rio Grande dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-7 in Mid-South Conference play.

Lindsey Wilson (11-5, 3-4 MSC) led by as many as 25 points but allowed Rio Grande to get within seven points in the second half after an 11-0 run. While the Lindsey Wilson bench was tense for a moment, Rainey got it back in front by double figures and never let off the gas.

There wouldn't be a slow start for Lindsey Wilson, much to the thanks of Brimm, who scored 11 points in the first 10 minutes to give her team a 22-11 lead after a layup by Rainey.

Brimm got it done with a variety of layups in transition as the RedStorm didn't appear to have a player on the court capable of stopping her. Once the defense shifted its focus to Brimm, Rainey and Emily Meeks, making her first career start, got into the mix on the block to extend the lead to 13 points.

After back-to-back threes by Brimm on the next two possessions, Lindsey Wilson was enjoying a 30-13 lead with 5:53 left in the half.

The good vibes continued up to a 37-13 lead, but then the RedStorm finally had a string of success of their own. Extending its press defense, Rio Grande forced enough turnovers to pull off a 10-0 run to climb within 14 at 37-23.

Lindsey Wilson scored the final three points of the half on free throws by Rainey to take a 40-23 lead into halftime.

Rio Grande couldn't gain any ground over the first 10 minutes of the second half as a three by Sarah Gillis gave the Blue Raiders an 18-point advantage. But the final 10 went a little better as Rio Grande went on an 11-0 run to climb within seven at 57-50.

A lead as high as 25 points for the Blue Raiders was slipping away. Rainey finally brought an end to the run with four straight points to put Lindsey Wilson back ahead by double digits with about eight minutes left.

The RedStorm never threatened from that point as the Blue Raiders secured the 19-point win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the court at 6 p.m. CT on Jan. 10 against Bluefield (Va.) at Biggers Sports Center.
