Late Run Dooms Women's Basketball in 74-70 Loss at Pikeville

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pikeville (Ky.) went on a 10-0 run late in the second half and took control of what had been a closely contested game as it beat the Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team 74-70 on Thursday at the East Kentucky Exposition Center.

Ashley Rainey led the Blue Raiders (15-11, 6-10 MSC) with another monster doubled-double of 26 points and 19 rebounds, but only Jasmine Brimm with 18 points joined her in double figures. Sarah Collins added seven points and five boards in the loss, while Sarah Gillis finished with six points, five rebounds and six assists.

For the Bears (10-16, 5-11 MSC), it was Callisha Johnson setting the tone with 28 points, while Brogan Conley finished with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Neither team shot well from the field with Pikeville edging Lindsey Wilson 38.6 percent to 36.4, but the Bears did hit nine of their 20 3-point attempts.

Led by Rainey, Lindsey Wilson controlled the backboards 48-36, but their poor shooting never allowed them to take a lead for good.

The Blue Raiders' largest lead was four points early in the first half before going into halftime tied at 33. Their last lead of the game came with 11:27 to play at 49-48 on a pair of Laura Skudra free throws.

Six minutes later Rainey hit a jumped to tie the score at 57, but Pikeville took off on its 10-0 run that ended with a Conley jumper to put the Bears ahead by double digits.

Brimm and Gillis hit two big threes in the final minute to make it a two-point game at 72-70 with 16 seconds to play, but Johnson hit two free throws for Pikeville and the Blue Raiders failed to get a shot off in the final seconds. Brimm went to the line with six seconds left, but missed the front end of a bonus situation.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday at UVa.-Wise in Wise, Va.
