Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson men's tennis backed up its Mid-South Conference regular season title with a tournament championship today at the Boone Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Blue Raiders (16-3) outlasted Cumberland (17-4) 5-3 in a battle of NAIA top-10 teams. The MSC Tournament title is the Blue Raiders' 10th straight dating back to the 2003 season. Lindsey Wilson also claimed an unaffiliated tournament championship -- which was played in lieu of a conference tournament -- in 2011.
No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson earns the Mid-South's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship in May in Mobile, Ala with today's win. No. 10-ranked Cumberland -- based on its national ranking -- should receive one of the national tournament's at-large bids.
Lindsey Wilson won all three doubles points in highly competitive matches.
The first Blue Raider point came from Pablo Vilches and Gilles Cornelis at No. 3 doubles. The Lindsey Wilson pair earned a break to take a 4-3 lead over Jeremy Fleming and Andres Burgos and held service the rest of the way en route to an 8-6 win.
Lindsey Wilson doubled its lead as Fabricio Morales and Marlon Dal Pont came back from 3-0 and 6-5 deficits to beat Pablo Borrero and Sebastian Nava 8-6.
Fernando Bogajo and Francisco Charters earned the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Manuel Marcelo and Pedro Rodrigues in a battle of nationally ranked doubles teams. No. 7-ranked Bogajo and Charters broke 17-ranked Marcelo and Rodrigues twice, including a break to take a 7-6 lead.
Bogajo served out the top-doubles match to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-0 lead.
It did not take the Blue Raiders long to seize a 4-0 lead as Morales blitzed Rodrigues 6-0, 6-1 in the second-seeded singles match.
From there, Cumberland mounted its comeback.
Borrero defeated Dal Pont 6-4, 6-3 in the third-seeded match and Marcelo beat Bogajo 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 4-2.
Nava inched the Bulldogs one closer with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Vilches in the fifth-seeded match.
But Lindsey Wilson would claim the tournament title in the next match as Cornelis defeated Fleming 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 to give the Blue Raiders the 5-3 win. Cornelis won the last two games of the second set to give the Blue Raiders the decisive point.
The match featuring Charters and Burgos was halted in the third set after the Blue Raiders had secured the fifth point.
Lindsey Wilson advances to the NAIA National Tournament May 14-18 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
