Women's Basketball finishes strong in 81-68 win at Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Lindsey Wilson women's basketball outscored host Bluefield (Va.) 18-5 over the final seven minutes of the game en route to an 81-68 win on Saturday at the Dome Gymnasium.

Freshmen Jamie Cummings and Chanel Roberts combined for 12 of the 18 points during the run to turn a 63-63 tie into the 13-point win. Cummings ended with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Roberts chipped in 14 points in the win.

In addition to converting offensively down the stretch, the Lindsey Wilson defense was equally impressive in the game's waning minutes.

Lindsey Wilson (14-4 and 4-2 in the Mid-South Conference) held Bluefield to just 2-for-10 shooting while forcing four turnovers in the final seven minutes. The Rams (7-6, 2-3) ended the game shooting 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field.

Lindsey Wilson led for the majority of the game, but the Blue Raiders struggled to get separation until the closing spurt. The game featured 13 ties and four lead changes.

While Cummings and Roberts did the work to close the game, it was Kayla Richardson and Cassidy Martin providing an outside scoring punch throughout the game.

Richardson tallied a game-high 19 points, including hitting three 3-pointers, while Martin made 4-of-7 from 3-point range to finish with 14 points. Bre Elder chimed in with 14 points to help the Blue Raiders to a third straight win.

Lindsey Wilson shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field, including nearly 39 percent from deep during the game.

Bluefield's Janee Simmons and Teqa McNeal each led the Rams with 18 points in the loss.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 16, as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 20 Cumberland (Tenn.) in Lebanon, Tenn.
