Elder's Career Day helps Women's Basketball defeat St. Catharine 76-66

ST. CATHARINE, Ky.Bre Elder scored a career-high 24 points in Lindsey Wilson's 76-66 victory over St. Catharine (Ky.) College Saturday afternoon.

Lindsey Wilson improves to 15-8 on the season and 5-6 in Mid-South Conference play. The win ends a four-game losing streak for the Blue Raiders.

St. Catharine falls to 3-14 on the year and 1-10 in the Mid-South with the loss.

Jamie Cummings added 14 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Kayla Richardson scored 19 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw stripe. Chanel Roberts finished with 10 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Elder fell just short of a double-double grabbing nine rebounds.

The Blue Raiders jumped out front early with an 8-2 run to open the game. St. Catharine would answer with a 10-2 run to take the lead at 12-10 with 12:57 to play in the first half. Lindsey Wilson would retake the lead with a 9-0 run to make it 19-12 after a pair of Cummings free throws.

Lindsey Wilson would maintain a slight advantage for the remainder of the half, leading by as many as six at 32-26 with 2:08 to play. The Patriots would score the final five points of the half to cut the lead to 32-31 at halftime.

The second half opened with St. Catharine taking the lead after a made field goal by Carol Ruiz-Lopez. Lindsey Wilson would take back the lead after a basket by Cummings, only to give it up on the ensuing possession by the Patriots. The back and forth exchange of baskets would continue for several minutes until St. Catharine's Rianne Hofstraat hit a three pointer to tie the game at 47 apiece with 12:50 to play.

The trend of exchanging buckets would continue until St. Catharine took a 60-54 lead after two-straight baskets by Cora Moore, forcing a Lindsey Wilson timeout with 8:55 to play. The Blue Raiders would respond with a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 61-60. The Patriots took the lead momentarily, but the Blue Raiders outscored St. Catharine 15-4 in the final six minutes to claim the 76-66 victory.

St. Catharine shot 39.0 percent from the field compared to 32.8 percent for Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders made 28-of-35 attempts from the free-throw line and turned the ball over just 10 times, compared to 16 by the Patriots. Lindsey Wilson held a slight 40-35 rebounding advantage for the game.

St. Catharine was led by Heather Sandlin with 17 points on the day, followed by Moore with 14, Hofstraat with 13 and Machera Calhoun with 12. Sasha Ruiz-Lopez grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action when they host Bluefield (Va.) College on Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Biggers Sports Center.
