Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. – The sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's tennis team fell to NCAA Division I opponent Eastern Kentucky University in a tightly-contested match Friday evening.
Lindsey Wilson (2-1) fell behind early to Eastern Kentucky (5-3) after the Colonels captured one point for winning the majority of the doubles matches.
Eastern Kentucky's Diego Asis and Sebastian Mueller defeated Ignacio Huertas and Raul Mendez 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles, followed by Joao Maio and Daridge Saidi defeating Edberg Espinoza and Pablo Vilches 8-5 at No. 3. Francisco Charters and Fabricio Morales suffered an 8-6 loss at the No. 1 to Alex Alvaro and Juanjo de la Llera, but the solo point had already been captured by the Colonels.
The Blue Raiders got on the scoreboard after Mendez defeated Mueller at the No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2 to tie the match 1-1.
Morales and Charters both suffered 6-3, 6-1 losses at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
Trailing 3-1, Lindsey Wilson refused to quit as Espinoza defeated Alvaro with a super tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) at the No. 1 position. Vilches won at the No. 6 position with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Asis to tie the match 3-3.
In the final matchup at No. 5, Huertas and Maio battled back and forth, Maio taking the first set 7-6, followed by Huertas winning the second 6-2. Maio eventually outlasted Huertas in the final set, winning 6-3 and sealing the match in favor of Eastern Kentucky 4-3.
The Blue Raiders return to action when they host Austin Peay State University on March 1 at noon.
