Women's Basketball's Upset bid falls short in final seconds at No. 23 Cumberlands, lose 69-67

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball lost a heartbreaker at University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 69-67 on a last second shot by the Patriots on Saturday at O Wayne Rollins Center.

Lindsey Wilson (18-10, 8-8 MSC) was up 67-64 with 1:07 left in regulation when Cumberlands made 3-of-4 free throws to tie the game 67-67. Lindsey Wilson turned it over and that led to a game-winning layup by Julie Haye with one second on the clock.

The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the game and stretched the lead to 13-7 after Cassidy Martin made all three free throws. Brooks Forsythe gave Cumberlands a 14-13 lead with 9:13 left in the first half.

The game would continue to go back-and-forth as the teams tied for the sixth time at 24-24. Lindsey Wilson took a 28-24 lead on Keosha Wisener three-point field goal with 2:43 left in the half and took a 30-27 lead into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson shot 40 percent from the field as Tara Arnold lead the Blue Raiders with six points in the first half. Cumberlands shot 29.4 percent (10-for-34) with Forsythe leading the way for the Patriots with 10 points in the half.

The Blue Raiders opened the second half with a 17-10 run to take a 48-37 lead – the largest lead of the game – with 11:48 left in regulation. The Patriots battled back as they went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 50-50 on a Jackie Alexander three-pointer.

Lindsey Wilson's Jamie Cummings made it 64-40 after making both of her free throw shots but Cumberlands kept the pressure on the Blue Raiders. Haye made it 64-62 after a made field goal. On the ensuing possession Haye's was fouled and made both to tie the game at 64-64

The Blue Raiders took the lead at 67-64 before the Patriots tied it on three field goals and won the game on the Haye's shot with one second left in the game.

Kayla Richardson led the Blue Raiders with 15 points and six rebounds while Chanel Roberts added 13 points and six rebounds. Haye led the Patriots with 23 points and three rebounds. Forsythe added 16 points and five rebounds in the win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the court on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. CT against University of Rio Grande (Ohio) at Biggers Sports Center.
