Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team defeated seventh-ranked Xavier (La.) 6-3 Friday night at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders (5-1) fell behind 1-0 to the Gold Rush (5-8) after Kyle Montrel and Nikita Soifer defeated Raul Mendez and Ignacio Huertas 8-1 at the No. 1 position to capture the first doubles point.
Lindsey Wilson answered at the No. 3 position when Edberg Espinoza and Pablo Vilches took down Viktor Svoboda and Adam Albrecht 8-5 to tie the match at 1-1.
In the final doubles matchup, Fabricio Morales and Francisco Charters were able to defeat Kevin Chaouat and Tushar Mandlekar 8-5 at the No. 2 position to take a 2-1 Blue Raider lead into the singles matches.
Morales took down Svoboda 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 singles to take a 3-1 lead. Xavier answered when Montrel defeated Espinoza at the No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2 to cut the lead to one at 3-2.
Huertas fell behind one set at the No. 5 singles but battled back for the 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Jordan Harrell to extend the Lindsey Wilson lead to 4-2.
The singles matches at the No. 6, No. 2 and No. 4 positions all went to a third and decisive set. Vilches took the first set at the No. 6 position 6-2 before falling 5-7 in the second set. Vilches made quick work in the final set winning 6-1 to help secure the win for Lindsey Wilson.
Soifer defeated Mendez 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-1 at the No. 2 position and Charters defeated Mandlekar 6-4, 6-7(4-7), 6-2, at the No. 4 position to add one final point and make the match 6-3 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders are back at it on Saturday when they travel to Campbellsville (Ky.) for a 2 p.m. CT start.
