Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 6 Lindsey Wilson tennis fell 5-4 to No. 7 Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Wednesday at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
Lindsey Wilson (9-2, 4-1 MSC) took an early 1-0 lead in the doubles matches as Pablo Vliches and Edberg Espinoza defeated Garry Tokas and Pedro Rodrigues 8-1. Vliches and Espinoza move to 10-1 this season.
In the second doubles match to finish, the No. 1 team of Ignacio Huertas and Raul Mendez lost to Manuel Marcelo and Diogo Soares 6-8 as Cumberland ties the match at 1-1. Huertas and Mendez move to 8-3 on the season.
At No. 2 doubles, 8th-ranked Fabricio Morales and Francisco Charters fell 7-9 to Pablo Borrero and Andres Burgos as Cumberland took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches.
Cumberland expanded its lead to 3-1 after 16th-ranked Marcelo defeated Mendez 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Mendez falls to 7-4 this season.
The Blue Raiders would cut the lead to 3-2 when 18th-ranked Espinoza defeated Borrero 6-4, 6-1. Espinoza moves to 8-3 this season including a 5-0 Mid-South Conference record.
43rd-ranked Morales tied it at 3-3 as he defeated Rodrigues 6-1, 6-4. Morales moves to 8-3 this season including a 4-1 record in the MSC.
Vliches gave Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 lead after beating Tokas 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Vliches is now 11-0 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in MSC play.
Cumberland responded in the next match as the No. 5 singles game finished with Burgos defeating Huertas 6-4, 6-4. With that win, Cumberland ties the dual 4-4 with one match left to finish.
Charters, playing in the No. 4 singles spot, took a 1-0 set lead over Soares after winning set one 6-3, but Soares came back in the second set to take it 4-6 and force a third set. Soares jumped out to a 3-0 lead followed by a 4-1 lead and finished the set 6-1 to take the point and the match 5-4.
Lindsey Wilson returns to the court on Thursday, April 10 at 2:30 p.m. CT at (RV) Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College.
