GEORGETOWN, Ky. – No. 7 Lindsey Wilson men's tennis defeated University of Pikeville (Ky.) 5-0 to advance to the Mid-South Conference Tennis Championship finals on Saturday, April 26 at the Lackey Tennis Center in Georgetown.
Lindsey Wilson (15-7) swept Pikeville in doubles competition, 3-0. The 9th-ranked doubles team of Francisco Charters and Fabricio Morales defeated Felix Singer and Pawel Tarasewicz 8-1 to give the Blue Raiders an early 1-0 lead. Charters and Morales improve to 13-4 on the season.
In the No. 3 doubles spot, Raul Mendez and Ignacio Huertas defeated Connor Smith and Francois Billet 8-3. Mendez and Huertas improve to 14-3 this season.
In the final doubles match of the day, Edberg Espinoza and Pablo Vilches beat Sven Rodenbusch and Marcos Fondelius 8-6 to give Lindsey Wilson a commanding 3-0 lead with five singles matches to play. Espinoza and Vilches are now 15-2 this season and 5-1 when playing No. 2 doubles.
36th-ranked Espinoza defeated Rodenbusch 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles position while Morales defeated Fondelius 6-1, 6-0 to give the Blue Raiders a 5-0 win and a trip to the MSC Championship finals on Saturday. Espinoza runs his singles record to 11-3 this season.
The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches that had started did not finish because the fifth and final point was captured to end the match.
Lindsey Wilson plays for its 11th-straight MSC Championship on Saturday, April 26 against Cumberland (Ky.) University at 1 p.m. CT at the Lackey Tennis Center in Georgetown. The Blue Raiders look to avenge a 5-4 loss to Cumberland during the regular season.
