Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. -- Fifth-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's tennis opened their 2014 NAIA National Championship with a 5-1 win this morning over No. 12-seed Northwestern Ohio at the Mobile Tennis Complex.

The Blue Raiders (17-2) advance to this afternoon's quarterfinal match with fourth-seeded Vanguard (Calif.). The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.

After having their opening match of the tournament delayed by rain on Wednesday, the Blue Raiders sprinted out of the gate by sweeping the doubles matches from the Racers for a 3-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson's Raul Mendez and Ignacio Huertas opened up the match with an 8-4 win over Austen Hammett Akira Kuwada in the third-seeded doubles match. Moments later, Fabricio Morales and Francisco Charters -- ranked No. 9 in the NAIA doubles rankings -- defeated Daniel Rueda and Ronnie Myburgh 8-5 for the 2-0 lead.

Edberg Espinoza and Pablo Vilches completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Emin Alpan and Thommy Johansson to give the Blue Raiders the 3-0 lead entering singles play.

Northwestern Ohio (22-4) came out swinging in the singles matches and led at one point in five of the six matches in the first set.

Johansson put the first point on the board for the Racers with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Morales in the second-seeded singles match to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Northwestern Ohio would get no closer as Blue Raiders regained their composure, winning at the third and fifth seeded matches.

Mendez dismissed Alpan 6-4, 6-2 to put the Blue Raiders on the cusp of the second-round win and Vilches put Lindsey Wilson into the national quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Michael Kock.

The remainder of the matches were stopped after the Blue Raiders earned the match's fifth point.

Due to yesterday's rains, Lindsey Wilson plays a second match today with its 5 p.m. CT match with Vanguard. The Lions defeated SCAD-Atlanta 5-0 in their second-round match today.
