Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 18th-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team withstood a fierce second-half rally by host Campbellsville (Ky.) to secure a 44-40 victory over the Tigers on Thursday evening at Ron Finley Stadium.
The win gave the Blue Raiders bragging rights in the Battle of Highway 55 rivalry game between the two schools. It marks the second year in a row Lindsey Wilson has claimed the trophy and the program's first-ever victory at Campbellsville.
The Blue Raiders received the opening kickoff and moved the ball seamlessly down the field before a fumble at the 10-yard line rolled into the end zone was recovered by the Tigers for a touchback.
Following the fumble, Campbellsville put together an eight play, 80-yard drive to score the first points of the game and take a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point attempt.
After a Blue Raider miscue gave Campbellsville the ball deep in Lindsey Wilson territory, the Blue Raider defense held strong and kept the Tigers to a field goal for a 9-0 lead at the 6:08 mark in the first quarter.
Lindsey Wilson settled in and senior quarterback Branden Cresap marched the Blue Raiders down the field on the next three possessions, all ending with a touchdown toss. Chaz Barnes, Cortez Barber and Hunter Lovell all with the scoring grabs.
A Campbellsville punt attempt was blocked and led to a safety which extended the Blue Raider lead to 23-9 with 9:13 to play in the half.
Campbellsville had a chance to score before the half, but the Blue Raider defense held on a 4th and 1 from their own five-yard line to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard and preserve the two-touchdown lead.
In the second half, the Blue Raiders (1-0) saw the Tigers (0-1) claw their way back into the contest after a 97-yard touchdown pass and a 32-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown cut the lead to 23-22. Cresap exited the game and Dylan Beasley entered for the first time in his collegiate career.
Beasley calmly led the Blue Raiders down the field before tossing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tavis Elzy to bring the lead to eight at 30-22.
The Tigers answered right back with a touchdown toss of their own, but failed to convert a two-point attempt leaving the Blue Raiders with a slim 30-28 lead with 2:55 to play in the third quarter.
Beasley once again marched the offense down the field before throwing another touchdown to Elzy for the 37-28 lead with 12:46 to go in the fourth.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Lindsey Wilson defense stripped the Tiger offense and Jeremy Bolden picked up the ball and took it in for a 10-yard defensive score.
Campbellsville scored with 5:17 remaining to bring the score to 44-34 after another failed two-point conversion.
The Tigers would score again with 1:44 to play to bring it to 44-40, but the onside kick attempt went directly to Emilio Gonzalez who safely covered the ball. The Blue Raiders were then able to run out the clock and secure the 44-40 victory.
By the final whistle, Campbellsville held a 31-21 edge in second-half points over visiting Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders were victorious despite being outgained by almost 150 passing yards as Campbellsville had 431 yards through the air compared to 282 yards for Lindsey Wilson.
Blue Raider starting quarterback Cresap had 215 passing yards on 16-of-21 attempts with three touchdowns. Barber caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, and Elzy finished with seven receptions for 80 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
On the defensive side, Andrew Wahl set a single-game program record for most sacks in a game with four. The Blue Raider defense totaled six sacks in all, the most in a single-game in program history. Eric Shaw led the team with nine tackles while Trey Wright had five tackles an interception.
For the Tigers, Jacob Russell threw for a game-high 414 yards and five touchdowns despite being dropped behind the line of scrimmage six times. Trevon Chatman hauled in game-high 12 receptions for 154 yards and three scores, and Demytreus Gipson had three catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns, including the 97-yard score in the third quarter.
Campbellsville's Daniel DeLeon led all players with 13 tackles total, and Stephon Tanga had nine tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 6, when Reinhardt (Ga.) University pays Blue Raider Stadium a visit. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
