Roberts' second half propels Women's Basketball to 73-65 win over Cumberlands

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Chanel Roberts scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the No. 21-ranked Blue Raiders to a 73-65 win over Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday at O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Following a 1-of-7 shooting half before intermission, Roberts made 6-of-7 in the second half to help Lindsey Wilson (16-4, 4-2 in the Mid-South Conference) win its fifth straight game.

Roberts' hot hand in the second half allowed the Blue Raiders to come back from a halftime deficit -- Lindsey Wilson trailed 33-31 at the break -- for just the third time in six tries this season.

Roberts and Ashley Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to start the second half and Lindsey Wilson never trailed again. Johnson scored nine points in her second start of the season.

Billie Hearn pushed the Blue Raider lead to seven points (46-39) with an offensive put back with 13:03 left. The lead swelled to double digits (57-47) at the 8:34 mark following Roberts' only 3-pointer of the game.

Cumberlands managed to climb within five points on two different occasions, but would get no closer en route to falling to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

While Cumberlands finished the game making 50 percent (27-of-54) of its shots, the Patriots could not overcome 27 turnovers and the loss of leading scorer Brooke Forsythe -- who suffered an injury early in the second half. Forsythe scored nine points -- 10 points below her season average -- in just 20 minutes of action.

The Blue Raiders took advantage of the miscues on their way to ending a six-game losing streak to Cumberlands in the Rollins Center.

Hearn and Kayla Richardson joined Roberts in double figures with 10 points each.

Lydia Box led the Patriots with 17 points -- including making five 3-pointers.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 22 as the Blue Raiders host Cumberland (Tenn.) at Biggers Sports Center.
