No. 21 Women's Basketball defeats Cumberlands 64-51 Thursday evening

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 21-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated visiting Cumberlands (Ky.) 64-51 Thursday night at Biggers Sports Center.

Chanel Roberts scored a game-high 18 points while Kayla Richardson tallied 10 points, all coming from the charity stripe, with three assists. Alexus Chinn had a strong output scoring six points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking three shots. Michelle Montgomery also turned in a six-point, six-rebound performance while Billie Hearn recorded seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Blue Raiders (17-5, 5-3 MSC) used a pivotal 11-2 run midway through the opening half to build a double-digit lead over the Patriots (11-10, 4-4 MSC).

After Cumberlands scored the first point of the game on a free throw, Lindsey Wilson scored the next six via two baskets from Roberts and one from Chinn. The Patriots battled back and cut the lead to one point on three separate occasions, but were never able to reclaim the lead.

The crucial Lindsey Wilson run came just over the midpoint of the opening half and included a pair of baskets each from Chinn and Ashley Johnson to give the Blue Raiders a 28-18 lead at the 4:53 mark. Cumberlands trimmed the lead down to eight points, but a 7-2 Blue Raider run in the final three minutes helped Lindsey Wilson take a 35-22 lead into halftime.

The Blue Raiders shot 42.9 percent in the first half, while the Patriots tallied a 32.0 percentage from the floor. Lindsey Wilson shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the charity stripe and Cumberlands posted a 50.0 percentage (3-of-6).

Cumberlands opened the second half scoring five-straight points, but a basket by Roberts extended the lead back to double-digits. The Blue Raiders led 37-27 with 17:01 to go in the game.

The Patriots managed work their way back into the game and cut the deficit to five points at 42-37 with 13:15 left after a 10-2 run, but the Blue Raiders managed to push the lead back to double digits at 10 after a pair of successful free throws by Cassidy Martin to make it 48-38 with 11:15 remaining.

Lindsey Wilson was able to hold a comfortable double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game, extending it to as many as 18 points at 63-45 with just over a minute to play.

The Blue Raiders finished the night shooting 36.7 percent from the floor, but the Patriots managed just a 26.3 percentage. Lindsey Wilson held a 48-34 rebounding advantage while also dominating with 26 points in the paint compared to just eight by Cumberlands.
