Women's Basketball upsets No. 12 Cumberland 57-55 on Thursday in MSC opener

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Lindsey Wilson women's basketball overcame a six point deficit at halftime to upset No. 12-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) 57-55 in their Mid-South Conference opener on Thursday at Biggers Sports Center.

Kayla Richardson made a career-high 6-of-8 three-point shots for a season-high 20 points to lead the Blue Raiders (4-1, 1-0 MSC) over the Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1 MSC). Richardson came within one point of her career-high point total. Chanel Roberts was the only other Blue Raider to score in double figures with 14 points.

The Blue Raiders shot 36.7 percent for the game and the Bulldogs shot 37.3 percent, but Lindsey Wilson made eight three-point shots compared to three for Cumberland.

Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland played to a 10-10 tie in the first quarter. Both teams struggled to find their shooting rhythm in the first quarter with the Bulldogs hitting 4-of-18 shots, while the Blue Raiders made 4-of-13 shots.

The Bulldogs found their shooting touch in the second quarter to make 7-of-15 shot attempts while holding the Blue Raiders to 5-of-17 from the field. Cumberland led by as many as 11 points in the quarter before Lindsey Wilson surged to cut the deficit to six, with the Bulldogs leading 29-23 going into halftime.

The Blue Raiders continued their run after halftime and turned what was once an 11 point deficit into a nine point lead with a 29-11 run that started with 3:38 to go in the second quarter and ended with 9:48 to go in the fourth quarter. The Blue Raiders sunk 7-of-14 shot attempts in the third quarter, including 3-of-6 from three.

The fourth quarter started with Lindsey Wilson leading 44-37 and the lead ballooned to nine at 46-37, but Cumberland fought back. The Bulldogs outscored the Blue Raiders 18-13 in the fourth quarter, and cut the lead to two points at 57-55 with just over one minute to play. The Bulldogs had three shot attempts in the last minute but could not get any of them to fall.

With 26 seconds to go, Cumberland missed a potential game tying fast-break layup after a Blue Raider turnover. The Bulldogs grabbed an offensive rebound and missed another shot attempt with six seconds to go. The ensuing rebound was fought for by both sides resulting in a jump ball that gave Cumberland one last chance. With 3.7 seconds on the clock, Chelsey Hall received the inbounds pass and released a three-point shot that clanged off the iron and landed harmlessly out of bounds as time expired giving the Blue Raiders the 57-55 victory.

Hall made 4-of-8 shots to score a team-high 12 points to go along with three assists, while Jazmine Smith converted on 4-of-9 shot attempts for 10 points.

The Blue Raiders return to the court on Saturday when they welcome Central State (Ohio) to Biggers Sports Center for an 11 a.m. CT tip off.
