Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa -- A dramatic fourth-quarter comeback fell just short today as No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson football fell 16-13 to No. 3-ranked Grand View (Iowa) in the NAIA Football Championship Series First Round at Williams Stadium.
The Blue Raiders (8-3) overcame a 13-3 deficit with 10 points over a 35-second span late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13-13.
Grand View's Joey Nissen's 31-yard field goal with 1.4 seconds left foiled the upset bid and ultimately sent the Vikings (11-1) into next weekend's national quarterfinals.
Grand View jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the opening quarter, thanks in large part to the NAIA's top-statistical defense and a couple of short fields -- aided by an excessive wind in frigid temperatures.
Following back-to-back Lindsey Wilson three-and-outs, the Vikings needed six plays and 16 yards to set up Ben Hurley's 35-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Following a third Blue Raider punt in as many drives, Grand View drove 65 yards for what would be its only touchdown of the day with 1:21 left in the first quarter. Viking quarterback Derek Fulton connected with Aaron Schultz in the back of the endzone for the 10-0 lead.
The game remained 10-0 into the half thanks to an important Lindsey Wilson defensive stand near the end of the second quarter.
Michael Brooks intercepted Fulton at the goal line in the waning minutes of the half to keep the deficit at 10. The pick was Brooks' program-best eighth of his career. He ended the game with a team-best 10 tackles.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the second half as Caleb Keeton moved the Blue Raiders within one score with a 27-yard field goal with 5:54 left in the third quarter.
Nissen's 25-yard field goal with 9:40 left put the Vikings in front 13-3.
After managing just 124 yards through the first three quarters, the Lindsey Wilson offense found some rhythm in the final quarter. The Blue Raiders ended the game with 225 yards.
Lindsey Wilson quarterback Dylan Beasley helped lead the Blue Raiders into scoring position. But, Grand View's Jake Shoultz forced the ball from Beasley's hands while attempting to dive for a first down. The miscue preserved the 10-point lead and gave the Vikings the ball with 6:45 left.
The Blue Raider defense -- who limited Grand View 274 yards of offense -- proved to be stingy on the next two Viking drives, both times forcing a three-and-out and giving the ball back to the Lindsey Wilson offense.
After being frustrated for three-and-half quarters, the Blue Raider offense finally found the end zone as Beasley found a streaking Carmetrick Ross for a 34-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 13-10 with 1:11 left.
On the ensuing kickoff, Keeton provided a perfect onside kick and Blake Wallace recovered the ball after it ricocheted off a Grand View player with just over a minute remaining.
The Blue Raiders managed one first down, but ultimately settled for a field goal attempt. Keeton was once again clutch, drilling a 44-yarder with 36 seconds left in regulation.
While overtime seemed inevitable, Grand View's Jordan Cheatem provided the biggest kickoff return of the game to help set up the game-winner.
Cheatem took the kickoff and raced to the Lindsey Wilson 48-yard line. A Blue Raider penalty tacked on an additional 15 yards giving the Vikings the ball at the Lindsey Wilson 33-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining.
After a pair of near Lindsey Wilson interceptions, Fulton found Trey Smith over the middle for a very important seven yards. Nissen did the rest, sending the ball just inside the right upright to give Grand View the 16-13 win.
Lindsey Wilson closes out the 2015 season with its second straight appearance in the Football Championship Series. Grand View hosts a quarterfinal game next Saturday in Des Moines.
