Women's Basketball pulls away in second half for 96-71 win over Asbury

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Lindsey Wilson women's basketball put together a 26-5 third quarter and the Blue Raiders rolled to a 96-71 victory over Asbury (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center on Tuesday night.

Five Blue Raiders scored in double figures. Chanel Roberts and Teanna Curry each scored a team-high 17 points, while Ashley Johnson and Courtney Sandlin contributed 12 points each. Kayla Richardson added 11 points on the evening. Curry also garnered eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

The Blue Raiders (6-1) shot 59.7 percent for the game and held the Eagles (4-4) to 41.9 percent from the field. Lindsey Wilson recorded a 17-8 advantage on points off of turnovers, a 36-18 edge in points in the paint, and a 37-13 lead in bench points.

Asbury jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first six minutes of the game behind three, three-point shots by Catie Fletcher, who scored nine of her 20 points in the first quarter. Lindsey Wilson responded with an 11-6 run over the final four minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 21 at the end of the first. Johnson, who shot 5-of-7 on the night, scored five points in the quarter, including a three-point shot during the Blue Raiders' game tying run.

Lindsey Wilson continued to surge in the second quarter and led by as many as eight points at 43-35 with 3:47 left in the half, but the Eagles clawed back to reduce the deficit to two points at 51-49. Michelle Montgomery made her only basket of the game to extend the Blue Raider lead to four points at 53-49 going into the half.

Lindsey Wilson played a dominant third quarter as they shot 10-of-17 to score 26 points while holding Asbury to 2-of-17 shooting. The Blue Raiders did not stop until the quarter ended and the lead had grown to 25 at 79-54. By the end of the third quarter, Roberts, Curry, Sandlin and Johnson had all reached double digit point totals for the game.

The Eagles matched the Blue Raiders in the fourth quarter as both teams scored 17 points, but the damage had been done. The Blue Raiders cruised to a 96-71 victory. Lindsey Wilson shot 7-of-13 in the quarter, while Asbury made 6-of-15 from the field.

Brittany Warren made 9-of-18 shots to lead the Eagles with 24 points. Warren and Fletcher, who made four three-point shots, were the only players to score in double figures for Asbury.

The Blue Raiders return to the court on Dec. 3 when they welcome Campbellsville (Ky.) to Biggers Sports Center for a 6 p.m. CT tip off.
