COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team grabbed their first win of the season as they defeated NCAA DII opponent Lane (Tenn.), 84-63, on Saturday night.
John B. Wethington grabbed his 500th career win as a head coach – all coming at Lindsey Wilson – in the process. After not being able to earn win No. 500 in his previous five attempts, he was able to earn his 500th win in his first attempt at Biggers Sports Center this season.
Chanel Roberts led the Blue Raiders (1-1) with 26 points, and four other players joined her in reaching double figures.
In the first quarter, Lindsey Wilson started the game on a 13-4 run in the first 5:44 of the quarter. The Dragons tried to inch their way back into the game, but the Blue Raiders did not trail at any point in the first quarter taking a 20-15 lead in the second quarter.
After Lindsey Wilson took a 31-20 lead with 6:49 left in the second quarter, Lane went on 15-0 run to take their first lead of the game and extended their lead to four points. Teanna Curry stopped the Dragon run with 30 second to play in the first half, but the Blue Raiders trailed 35-33 heading into halftime.
The game went back-and-forth to start the third quarter, as the lead changed hands seven times in the first 3:55 of the quarter. After Lindsey Wilson took a 45-44 lead with 6:05 to play in the third quarter, the Blue Raiders did not look back as they led 58-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
Lindsey Wilson started to extend their lead in the fourth quarter as they took a 16-point lead with 5:44 left in regulation after a three-pointer by Malerie Martin. The Blue Raiders grabbed their largest lead of the game with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter at 84-61.
The Blue Raiders went on to capture their first win of the season, 84-63, after the Dragons hit a late basket. For the game, Lindsey Wilson shot 51.7 percent from the field, compared to 41.3 percent from Lane.
