No. 15 Football beats Bethel 30-22

Box Score

MCKENZIE, Tenn. -- No. 15-ranked Lindsey Wilson football got back to its winning ways today with a 30-22 win over Bethel (Tenn.) at Wildcat Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson (7-2, 2-2 in the MSC West) built a 17-0 halftime lead and held on to the eight-point win to end a two-game losing streak. Bethel falls to 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in the West with the loss.

The Blue Raiders ran a season-high 92 plays, but had to withstand the Wildcats in the waning minutes on Senior Day.

With Bethel driving and trailing 30-22 in the final minute, the Lindsey Wilson defense provided back-to-back big plays to end the comeback attempt. Steve Wallace stuffed a Wildcat run on third down and Michael Brooks sacked quarterback Braxton Baugus on fourth-and-nine from the Lindsey Wilson 39-yard line to give the ball back to the Blue Raider offense for victory formation.

Brooks finished with eight tackles, four tackles for a loss, two sacks and an interception.

Lindsey Wilson looked to be in complete control of the game, leading 17-0 at the break. The Blue Raiders had outscored their opponents 83-0 in the third quarter this season.

Bethel's Quincy Walden single-handedly brought the Wildcats back within striking distance. Walden -- who rushed for 136 yards in the game -- scored on 14 and 21-yard runs, the latter cutting the deficit to 30-22 early in the fourth quarter.

Before Walden found the end zone, Bethel's Logan Diebold scored on a one-yard plunge to cap the opening drive of the second half and get the Wildcats within 17-7.

The Lindsey Wilson offense responded with an 11-play, 49-yard scoring drive. Cory Davenport scored from three yards out to give the Blue Raiders a 23-7 lead.

Walden scored the first of his touchdowns with a pair of runs bookend around a Lindsey Wilson penalty. A two-point conversion cut the Blue Raider lead to 23-15.

Lindsey Wilson extended its lead back to 15 points (30-15) as Zak Mizell -- in his first collegiate start -- closed an eight-play drive with a one-yard toss to fellow freshman Jay Gaudlock. Mizell finished 20-of-40 passing for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Gaudlock had six catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

On the subsequent drive, Walden scored on a 21-yard run to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 30-22.

The two defenses exchanged stops over the final 12-plus minutes, including the final stop by the Blue Raiders to secure the win.

In the first half, the Lindsey Wilson defense blanked an opponent for a second straight half. The Blue Raiders kept Campbellsville (Ky.) off the scoreboard in the second half last week.

Brooks and Avery Ford each had interceptions in the first quarter to thwart Bethel scoring chances in the red zone. Brooks secured his second interception of the season and seventh of his career -- tying a program record -- at the Lindsey Wilson 14-yard line. Ford grabbed his second pick of the season in the endzone to keep the Wildcats scoreless.

While the Blue Raider defense stood tall, Bethel was equal to the task in the opening quarter, as both teams exited the period scoreless.

The Blue Raider offense found some rhythm in the 17-point second quarter.

Mizell led the Blue Raiders 99 yards following a Lindsey Wilson goal-line stand for the game's first score. Jalen Sublett scored on a three-yard run to cap the 15-play drive. Caleb Keeton added the extra point to give Lindsey Wilson the 7-0 lead. Sublett finished with 72 yards on eight carries, including the touchdown.

Following a Bethel three-and-out, Lindsey Wilson doubled its lead with a six-play, 57-yard drive. Mizell connected with Gaudlock for a 25-yard touchdown to push the Blue Raiders ahead by two scores.

Keeton provided the final points of the half with a 48-yard field goal as time expired on the half. The field goal -- which made it 17-0 at the break -- ties for the second longest field goal in the program's history. Keeton has the longest at 51 yards, set last season.

The Lindsey Wilson offense posted 455 yards, including 221 on the ground. Josh Haney led the rushing attack with 81 yards on 12 carries.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 14, as the Blue Raiders host Cumberland (Tenn.) in the regular-season finale at Blue Raider Stadium.
