Box Score RED OAK, Iowa – The fifth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 sweep of No. 13 Graceland (Iowa) on Thursday afternoon.
After winning all three doubles points, the Blue Raiders (3-2) did not drop a single set during singles play to the Jackets (3-1) en route to the clean sweep.
At the top doubles position, Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters, who rank No. 6 as a doubles pairing, took down Graceland's Jose Razo and Borja Perez, ranked No. 8 as a doubles team, by an 8-2 margin.
Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez followed suit at the second doubles position with an 8-2 win of their own over Brezile Hamilton and DJ Parker. Ignacio Huertas and Pablo Vilches completed the 8-2 trend as they defeated Denile Tarantinov and Felipe Suarez at the No. 3 doubles, claiming the third and finals doubles point for the Blue Raiders.
With the 3-0 lead, Charters quickly made it a 4-0 Lindsey Wilson advantage by defeating Hamilton at the No. 4 singles position, 6-1, 6-0. Espinoza captured the fifth and decisive point for the Blue Raiders at the top singles position as he defeated Razo 6-3, 6-2.
With the match mathematically in hand, Lindsey Wilson continued to roll as Mendez won at the No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-3, Porcic won at the No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4, Vilches won at the No. 6 position 6-4, 6-2, and Huertas completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles position.
"The energy level was great and we were able to maintain it throughout the day," Lindsey Wilson tennis coach Daniel Finn said. "The way we played doubles really set the tone for the match and when our guys play that well, we are going to be tough to beat."
Lindsey Wilson has a quick turnaround as they are set to face off with NCAA Division II member Northwest Missouri State, who ranks No. 17 in NCAA DII, tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT.
