Box Score RED OAK, Iowa – The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team completed their Iowa road trip with a 7-2 win over NCAA Division II member Northwest Missouri State on Friday evening.
The fifth-ranked Blue Raiders (4-2) used strong singles play to top the Bearcats (0-1), who rank No. 17 in the NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.
Lindsey Wilson was able to gain an early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez notched the first Blue Raider points of the day as the duo won at the No. 2 doubles position 8-3 over Romain Boissinot and Hicham Azzaoui.
The top doubles pairing of Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters tacked on another point after defeating Alvaro Riveros and Maruo Tete 8-5 for the 2-0 lead.
But the Bearcats kept the Blue Raiders from sweeping the doubles points as Josef Altmann and Fin Glowick held off Ignacio Huertas and Pablo Vilches for the 8-6 win at the third doubles position.
With a 2-1 lead, Mendez quickly added another point as he defeated Riveros 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position to push the lead to 3-1. Porcic added another win at the No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tete to bring Lindsey Wilson within one point of clinching the match.
Espinoza added the decisive fifth point as he defeated Boissinot 6-1, 6-4 at the top singles match to seal the win for the Blue Raiders.
The lone setback in singles play came at the No. 4 position as Altmann was able to outlast Charters 7-5, 6-4 for the final Bearcat point.
Huertas and Vilches later added victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively. Huertas took down Azzaoui 6-1, 6-2 and Vilches defeated Glowick 6-4, 6-2.
Up next for the Blue Raiders is the home opener on Feb. 28 as Lindsey Wilson welcomes NCAA Division I member Austin Peay State (Tenn.) to the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
