Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 16-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team was upset by Cumberland (Tenn.) 50-48 on Thursday night after the Bulldogs got a buzzer-beating layup to fall at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

With the score tied at 48-48, the Blue Raiders (21-8, 9-5 MSC) had a shot to take the lead but a Chanel Roberts jumper missed as the shot clock ran down with 24 seconds to play. The Bulldogs (15-11, 8-6 MSC) took over on the ensuing possession and after a Chelsey Hall missed runner that airballed with three seconds to go, Shantanique Tolbert collected the rebound and put up a wide open layup at the buzzer that gave Cumberland the 50-48 victory.

Roberts did all she could offensively for the Blue Raiders pouring in a game-high 22 points. No other Blue Raiders managed to reach double figures in scoring. Billie Hearn led Lindsey Wilson with 10 rebounds in the loss.

Cumberland's Kaitlin Oliver led the Bulldogs with 12 points while Brittany Lawson grabbed 14 rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the early goings as the first points of the game did not come until the 15:50 mark when Ashley Johnson knocked down a three pointer. The teams had gone a combined 0-for-13 from the floor before the made basket.

The shooting slowly improved as the Blue Raiders and Bulldogs began trading baskets before Lindsey Wilson built a six-point lead at 19-13 with 7:50 to play in the first.

But the shooting woes returned and Lindsey Wilson managed just three more points until the break while Cumberland scored six to make it a 22-19 Blue Raider halftime lead.

Out of the combined 65 shots put up in the first half by both teams, just 18 fell, nine by each squad.

Lindsey Wilson went 9-for-30 from the floor and 2-for-6 from beyond the arc while Cumberland went 9-for-35 and 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.

As the game went on in the second half, the teams were unable to separate from one another as both teams used strings of points to keep it a seesaw game. The Bulldogs used five quick points to take a 38-35 lead with 8:03 to play, but just minutes later the Blue Raiders went a run of their own to take a 44-40 lead with 4:37 to play.

The game remained close until it became tied at 48-48 with 1:20 to play after a jumper by Roberts.

The teams traded missed baskets on their next possessions before the final game-winning Cumberland basket.

Lindsey Wilson shot 36.2 percent from the field and finished 2-for-8 from three point range, missing the only two shots attempted in the second half from beyond the arc. Cumberland shot 33.8 percent from the floor and just 2-15 from three point range.

Despite tonight's loss, Lindsey Wilson still wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

The Blue Raiders now begin preparations for the MSC Women's Basketball Tournament set to begin on March 5 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.
