No. 3 Football opens home slate with 28-9 victory over Bluefield

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The third-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team hosted Bluefield (Va.) in their first home game of the season as the Blue Raiders were able to come away with a 28-9 victory. Lindsey Wilson outscored the Rams, 21-6 in the second half to secure their third win of the year.

Josh Haney led the Blue Raider (3-0) offense with three touchdowns on the ground and 59 total rushing yards. Dylan Beasley was able to connect with Hunter Lovell for his lone to touchdown pass of the game.

Beasley completed the game 27-for-41 and racked up 270 passing yards. Allen Cooks and Josh Noel each caught four balls for 48 and 15 yards, respectively. Tavis Elzy had the most receiving yards for the Lindsey Wilson totaling 51 yards on three catches.

In the first quarter, neither team could break the scoreless battle after Lindsey Wilson stopped Bluefield (0-4) inside the Blue Raider five yard line to force a turnover-on-downs to put a halt on an 11 play 66 yard drive for the Rams.

On the ensuing possession for the Blue Raiders, Lovell had his punt blocked to give Bluefield good field position at the Lindsey Wilson 29-yard line. The Blue Raider defense came up big once again as they forced the Rams to a 30-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide at the beginning of the second quarter.

Bluefield broke the scoreless in the second quarter with 8:47 remaining in the quarter as they capped off a ten play 64-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

On the next drive for Lindsey Wilson, they marched down the field with a ten play, 48-yard drive and Haney got the Blue Raiders on the scoreboard with a 13-yard touchdown run and Caleb Keeton, who went 4-for-4 on extra points, converted on the PAT to give Lindsey Wilson a 7-3 lead.

In the final minutes of the first half, the Blue Raiders looked to increase their lead as they had the ball on their own 23-yard line with 1:34 to play in the second quarter, but Cory Davenport fumbled near midfield to halt the drive as Lindsey Wilson held on to a 7-3 lead at halftime.

Bluefield received the ball to start the second half and the Lindsey Wilson defense forced a three-and-out. In the first possession of the third quarter for the Blue Raiders, they compiled a seven play 53-yard drive, scoring in just 2:36 as Haney punched in his second touchdown of the game.

Lindsey Wilson forced another turnover-on-downs in their own territory, but they could not manufacture any points on their next drive as Beasley fumbled the ball in the redzone. Prior to the turnover, the Blue Raiders converted their longest play of the afternoon as they put together a reverse flea-flicker and Beasley connected with Elzy for a 39-yard pass.

The Blue Raider defense stepped up big once again as Tony Brackins Jr., came away with his first interception of the season and returned the interception 20-yards to give Lindsey Wilson possession at the Bluefield 25-yard line. Four plays later Beasley found Lovell in the endzone to increase the Blue Raider lead to 21-3 with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter.

The Rams found their first touchdown of the game with 6:18 left in regulation as they capped off the longest drive of the game – 12 plays for 71 yards – with a two-yard touchdown. Bluefield could not convert on the PAT as Lindsey Wilson held a 21-9 lead.

On the next drive for the Blue Raiders, Haney scored his third touchdown of the game as Lindsey Wilson took a 28-9 lead. Jalen Sublett set up the touchdown on the prior play as he received a swing pass from Beasley and gained 20-yards to bring the ball down to the Ram two-yard line.

The ensuing drive for the Rams ended with an interception by James Hill Jr. to seal the 28-9 victory for the Blue Raiders.

Michael Brooks led the Blue Raider defense with nine total tackles and two pass breakups, along with a forced fumble. Chris Oldham and Justin Wade recorded the only two sacks Lindsey Wilson, while Wade also had a pair of tackles for loss.

Lindsey Wilson is idle next weekend, before they travel to Barbourville, Ky., to face Union (Ky.) on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. CT.
