Women's Basketball defeats Cumberland 63-56 behind Martin's career night

LEBANON, Tenn. – Lindsey Wilson's Malerie Martin stepped to the free-throw line with 2:57 to go in the fourth quarter and the Blue Raiders trailing Cumberland (Tenn.) 53-52. Martin hit the first shot to tie the score at 53, and moments later, she sunk the second shot to give Lindsey Wilson a 54-53 advantage. The Blue Raiders outscored the Phoenix 9-3 the rest of the way to win their 17th game of the season 63-56.

No. 22 Lindsey Wilson women's basketball defeated Cumberland (12-8, 2-6 MSC) 63-56 in a Mid-South Conference matchup at the Dallas Floyd Gymnasium in Lebanon, Tenn., on Thursday. The Blue Raiders (17-4, 5-3 MSC), who won their second game against the Phoenix to sweep the regular-season series, were led by Martin, who posted career highs in points (23), made field goals (8), made three-point shots, (5) and made free throws (2). She was the only Blue Raider to score in double figures.

Lindsey Wilson shot 44.2 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent on three-point attempts, while holding Cumberland to 33.3 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Blue Raiders made eight three-pointers while the Phoenix made four.

The game was a see-saw affair for the first three quarters. The score was tied at 13 after the first quarter before the Blue Raiders pulled narrowly ahead of the Phoenix 24-22 at the half. Cumberland fought back and outscored Lindsey Wilson 20-16 to pull ahead 44-40 going into the fourth. The Blue Raiders responded in the fourth, and took the lead for good when Martin converted her free throws with 2:57 to go.

The Phoenix were paced offensively by Bre Neal and Nicole Banners. Neal made 7-of-11 shots for 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Banners earned a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. CT game at St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).
