No. 5 Women's Basketball runs past Midway 69-47

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team opened play inside Biggers Sports Center with a 69-47 victory over Midway (Ky.) on Wednesday night.

The Blue Raiders (2-0) celebrated a milestone in the fourth quarter of the victory. Kayla Richardson entered the game needing 12 points to reach 1,000 in her Lindsey Wilson career. The senior guard knocked down a three-pointer with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter to bring her within one point and then made both free throws at 6:48 to complete the search for 1,000.

Lindsey Wilson fed off the energy of their crowd to build a sizeable first-quarter lead and never looked back, never trailing in the game.

Michelle Montgomery opened the game with a field goal, and Lindsey Wilson scored the next seven points. Now leading 9-2, a Montgomery three-pointer with 6:02 in the first quarter sparked a 9-0 run to close out the quarter.

The Eagles (1-1) struggled to find their footing in the first 10 minutes – scoring only two points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Lindsey Wilson built the lead to 21 points on two separate occasions in the second quarter and carried a 35-16 lead into the break.

Kayla Styles left her imprint in the first half, leading all players in points (7), rebounds (6) and assists (3). The junior forward finished the game with a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double, sharing the game-high in points and leading the game in boards.

Malerie Martin scored on a layup to give Lindsey Wilson a 51-28 edge with 3:08 left in the third quarter, but the Eagles scored eight of the next 10 points to whittle the deficit to 17 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Blue Raiders built their biggest lead of the night at 66-38 in the fourth quarter, but again Midway worked hard to chip away at the lead, eventually falling by 22.

Lindsey Wilson shot 44.1 percent from the floor in the victory and limited the Eagles to a 27.1 field goal percentage.

Courtney Pfister led Midway in scoring with 10 points. Patrice Tonge grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, playing NCAA Division I Louisville in an exhibition game at the KFC Yum! Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
