Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team won its ninth-straight game to start the season after defeating Mid-South Conference rival No. 4 Campbellsville (Ky.) on the road, 88-65.
The Blue Raiders (9-0, 2-0 MSC) had six different players reach double figures with J'Nayah Hall and Kayla Styles leading the way with 15 points apiece. Chanel Roberts chipped in with 14 points. Kayla Richardson, Courtney Sandlin and Malerie Martin each had 10 points for Lindsey Wilson. LeaAnn Grider scored a game-high 20 points for the Tigers (7-2, 1-1 MSC).
After both teams made their first field goals of the game within the first 30 seconds of the first quarter, neither team scored for nearly two minutes as the game was tied at two. Campbellsville struggled to shoot the ball as the Tigers missed five-straight shots.
Despite the drought from Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson could not capitalized as it only led by two points during the Tigers dry spell. Following a pair of made free throws from Campbellsville, the Blue Raiders went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 1:46 to play in the second quarter.
The Tigers ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run to pull within two points after the quarter. Grider capped off the quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer, which was the first made three-pointer of the game for Campbellsville.
Lindsey Wilson scored on its first shot attempt of the second quarter, but they were held without a field goal of the next 3:02. Like the Blue Raiders, Campbellsville also struggled shooting the ball in the second quarter making just one of its first seven field goals.
During the Lindsey Wilson shooting drought, the Tigers made it a 22-20 game at the 7:47 mark in the second quarter. The Blue Raiders countered with a 10-0 run to take a 32-20 lead with just over four minutes to play.
The two teams traded points down the stretch in the second quarter as Lindsey Wilson held a 36-26 lead at the half.
The Blue Raiders finished the first half shooting 44.1 percent from the field, while Campbellsville made just eight field goals and shot 28.6 percent. Both teams had one made three-pointer during the first 20 minutes.
To start the third quarter, Lindsey Wilson came out strong making six of its first eight shots. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 57-39, which was the largest lead for Lindsey Wilson through the first three quarters.
The Blue Raiders shot 61.1 percent in the third quarter making 11-of-18 field goals in the quarter and led 60-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Campbellsville started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 to cut its deficit to 10 points, but Lindsey Wilson put together a 15-3 run to grab a 75-53 lead with 4:43 left in regulation. The Tigers looked to make one last run at the Blue Raiders, but Campbellsville only came within 15 points as Lindsey Wilson came away with an 88-65 victory.
The Blue Raiders shot 56.7 percent from the floor during the game, which set a new season best. Lindsey Wilson also had a season-high 34 assists on 38 made baskets in the contest. The Blue Raiders were two assists shy of tying their program record of 36 assists, which was set on Dec. 17, 1992 against Wilberforce (Ohio).
Lindsey Wilson moves 9-0 to start the season, which is the second-best start in program history after starting the 1990-91 season with a 13-0 mark.
The Blue Raiders are back in action next Saturday against Indiana Southeast in New Albany, Indiana. Tipoff is slated for noon CT.
