Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team was handed a 7-0 defeat by NCAA Division I institution Eastern Kentucky on Friday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The Blue Raiders (1-1) were unable to get much going as Lindsey Wilson won just one set on the day against the Colonels (4-6).
Using NCAA rules where the best-of-three format is used to determine the winner of the one doubles point, Eastern Kentucky jumped ahead 1-0 after winning all three doubles matches.
Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas were the first Blue Raider duo to fall, dropping the No. 2 doubles match to Sebastian Mueller and Diego Asis 6-1. Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez then fell to Alex Alvaro and Ramon van Flymen at the top doubles flight, 6-3, before Javier Raya and Tomas Depiaggio dropped the final doubles match by a score of 6-1 to Diogo Soares and Guillem Sanchis to give the Colonels the 1-0 match lead.
Porcic, Mendez, Huertas, Tellez and Depiaggio were all swept in the top five singles flights. Only Raya in the No. 6 singles position was able to win a set, taking the second set to force a tiebreaker against Indra Patwardhan. Raya dropped the opener 6-1, but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set to force the tiebreaker. Patwardhan edged out Raya 12-10 in the tiebreaker to complete the shutout on the day for Eastern Kentucky.
The Blue Raiders were scheduled to return to action on Sunday against Cumberlands (Ky.) in a nonconference match, but that match has been postponed due to weather conditions. Lindsey Wilson is now scheduled to return to the courts on Feb. 23 for another battle with an NCAA Division I institution, Morehead State (Ky.).
