No. 22 Women's Basketball falls to No. 7 Shawnee State at home, 77-68

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The 22nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team lost to seventh-ranked Shawnee State (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon, 77-68. This was the Blue Raiders first loss in their last six games.

Chanel Roberts led Lindsey Wilson (20-5, 6-4 Mid-South Conference) with 14 points, while Teanna Curry and Kayla Richardson chipped in with 13 points apiece against the Bears (23-4, 11-2 MSC).

After the Blue Raiders scored the first four points of the game, the Bears battle backed to tie the game at four points apiece with 8:28 left to play in the first quarter. Both teams battled back-and-forth through the early part of the first quarter as the game was tied three different times.

After Shawnee State led 13-12 with 3:31 left in the first quarter, the Bears went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-12 lead with 2:21 to play in the opening quarter. Despite Lindsey Wilson making it a two-point game with just over a minute to play in the period, the Blue Raiders trailed 23-16 after the first quarter.

Lindsey Wilson tried to keep the game with in reach throughout the second quarter, as they cut their deficit to four points with 5:34 left to play in the first half. The Bears then went on a 9-3 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 37-27 with 2:29 left in the first half. The Blue Raiders scored the final three points of the half to make it a 37-30 game at the half.

For the half, Lindsey Wilson shot 38.9 percent from the floor compared to 43.8 percent from Shawnee State. The Bears made 3-of-7 shots from behind the arc, while the Blue Raiders were 1-of-9 from three-point land.

Shawnee State came out strong to start the second half as they opened on an 11-3 run over the first 3:24 of the period. After a Lindsey Wilson timeout, the Bears continued to click on both ends of the floor as they scored the next four points to take a 52-33 lead, which was their largest lead of the game, with 4:50 to play in the third quarter.

To close out the third quarter, the Blue Raiders cut their deficit to 61-46 heading into the fourth.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball to start the final quarter as the Blue Raiders hit their first field goal of the period at the 7:05 mark. Lindsey Wilson started on a 6-1 run over the first 3:18 of the quarter to make it a 62-52 game with 6:32 left to play.

Shawnee State hit their first field goal moments later to put an end to the Blue Raider run. The Bears extended their lead to 15 points once again, but Lindsey Wilson did not go away quietly as they slowly chipped away at their deficit. The closest the Blue Raiders came down the stretch was 73-66 with 29 second to play after a three-pointer from Richardson. Shawnee State came away with a 77-68 victory.

The Bears shot an even 50 percent from the field for the game, while shooting 46.2 percent from the beyond the arc. Lindsey Wilson finished the game shooting 41.5 percent from the floor and shot 33.3 percent from three.

With the loss, the Blue Raiders seven-game home win streak was snapped along with their six-game winning streak.

Lindsey Wilson now faces No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Thursday night in Campbellsville, Ky., for a 5 p.m. CT tipoff.
